AJ if you need a gun for home security, hubby has extras for you and the wife.

It takes months to get a permit for a firearm around here. And I hear you may not get it at all if you're not willing to drop by the police station every few weeks to push things along.

This was the scene at our local Costco's cash registers last Sunday...

It's funny how life is so often a self-fulfilling prophesy. I have never had a gun and never felt the need for one. I have lived in New York and Washington, D.C. areas, as well as all over Asia. I know others who would never be without theirs. They tend to be people who, in general, are stay-at-home paranoids. They won't go anywhere or do anything without first dreaming up an improbable worst-case scenario.

In short, I see guns as more a symptom of one's psychological state than anything else. Is it really any surprise that the Party of Fear (GOP) has a pro-gun base of support?

I disagree with you, and respectfully suggest that you are confusing (or at least blending) the issues of gun ownership generally and the constitutionally guaranteed right to keep and bear arms. Historically speaking the right to own a gun to defend yourself was a way of defending your family from not just dangerous people, but from armed dominance by the government itself. In this day and age the thought that a handgun would be a meaningful impediment to the force of a police state is not reasonable. Formally disarming the population would however be an abuse of power clearly indicating a sea-change in the view of government towards constitutionally guaranteed individual rights.

In short, I see advocating a severe restriction of the ability to have a gun as a symptom of a certain kind of paranoid mental state. No matter if we each have guns or not, we definitely do not need the government telling us we can't have them. By the way, I have also lived and worked in Asia, and traveled to a good portion of the rest of the world. I would not describe myself as any sort of stay-at-home paranoid or gun freak.
