I wasn't paying attention. Obviously I'd heard of 50 cent. I was just in la-la land, probably on Facebook or blogging or something (this was pre-VJ)

Nutty,

Are they offering to pay for the college courses? and if so,do you have to sign a contract stating you will stay with them for a certain period of time?

If they are offering to pay for them, I would take the position, gain the experience that you can put on your resume(with the title included) and see if its as stressful as you think.

If it is indeed "too much" then you can always stay there while you look for another legal assistant job that pays more and has more pofessional management.

If they arent offering to pay for the courses, tell them you'll take the job for the nominal raise if they pay for the classes.

Thats my input, for what its worth.

That said, I am also from the school of thought that you spend too much time at work to be miserable.

:)

Good luck,

Lisa

Timeline: 13 month long journey from filing to visa in hand

If you were lucky and got an approval and reunion with your loved one rather quickly; Please refrain from telling people who waited 6+ months just to get out of a service center to "chill out" or to "stop whining" It's insensitive, and unecessary. Once you walk a mile in their shoes you will understand and be heard.

Thanks!

Dear Nutty,

i think you have a good head on your shoulders. You have to take care of you first. If it's not what you want and your heart is not in it... and you have to concentrate on your private life... and you have one foot out the door already, then i think you made a good decision.

I like what Lisa said about them paying for the classes and gaining the title and experience as a stepping stone to transition out of this job into something more substantial pay and it will work for you. Everything is a compromise and this is the art of negotiation. Sheesh we're all married to MENA ppl and should be well aware of the signs of negotiation with bargaining. You shouldn't be offended by the small amount they offered. They are just establishing the lowest point they want to get you at. That is when you retaliate with your dream wage which can be something outrageous and laugh in thier faces! Then they make a counter offer that is realistic but still lower than what you expect. That's when you counter with 1-2 dollars higher than what you expect to be paided. They usually land within the 50 cent range of what you'll pick.

Has nobody else negotiated a decent wage before?

Bridget is right too. Look up salary.com for the going rate in your area for legal aide. Then you have an idea what wage to expect and pitch 1-2 dollars higher than that.

But you can drag out a negotiation until the challanger returns to the status quo.

I have negotiated and normally they do low ball you at first. I agree if you come back ask for more money than what you expect and let them come back with either a no or a more reasonable offer. If they want you bad enough they will pay a little more. Heck even 1-2 dollars more that's an extra 160-320 a month.

I was forced to take the promotion!

I called the Oregon Department of Labor and asked if my salary could be reduced if I refused a promotion. Secondly, I would more than likely receive more work as retaliation from my supervisors.

SO I accepted the promotion

Good luck Nutty. I had a similar situation years ago and it has paid off for me BIG TIME :D So perhaps we can not see where our path leads right now (and for sure doesn't always make sense) but now that I'm looking back...I can thank god for the choice I made (including a small supply room closet of an office!).

My supervisor said, "given the economy, we can get people pretty cheap."

That's really mean. It's true that anyone who has a job these days should be really grateful, but you know what? The same can be said for your supervisor's position too! A supervisor can be replaced with cheaper labor also!...given the economy!

I hope your job is alot better than you expect and it turns out to be a good thing. Best of luck!

UPDATE - from Nutty

I was forced to take the promotion. My stress levels went sky high because my new supervisor has verbal dihhrea (when giving instructions) and is verbally abusive at time (SHUT UP! I'm TALKING!!!). I have been reemed daily by big boss, the bankruptcy trustee while my supervisor has been out on sick leave. He thinks she trained me on everything, when in fact I got training on basically how to sort the mail and get a report off the computer.

Nothing is for sure in this company,

Promised the office with the window by the HR guys, but two days later the big trustee (head of the company said, "well I haven't made that decision yet)

Was told by the HR people I get overtime for any tasks that needed to be done on overtime, but then the Trustee said later, "I only said you could have if it was for training under the Chapter 7 paralegal."

This place literally had me in tears every night. Had to start seeing a counselor for it.

So I am quiting. Got a temp job limed up with a former employer, tax firm, that starts on January 19. Finishes APril 15. At least with them I get a proper bonus (last time I worked for them they gave me $500.00 for being 3 month temp worker). And they splurge on a wonderful restaurant party for end of tax season celebration. My current boss, the bankruptcy trustee took all of us to burgerville after he forced up to volunteer in a soup kitchen. There was no real fancy party.

Good I feel great!!!

I may not have health insurance with the tax people. But this job was making me sick.

After tax season ends, I am going to India for three months!!!

Love NUTTY (now the lost pilgrm)
