Turned down "promotion"

People,

I just turned a promotion. I am currently a receptionist/admistrative assist. My supervisors wanted to promote me to "legal assistant." However, I was offered a 50 cent raise, a small closet-sized office with no windows, more work, and would have to take a class at the local community college for some legal training.

I already do the legal assistant position. But I work at great desk with views all around. I want less work, not more. I also think the 50 cent raise was being cheap.

So I turned down the position. Truthfully, I need less stress now, not more. And a new position would be more stress and work.

My husband is angry with me for not taking the position.

But given our marriage troubles, I don't see myself staying around past next August.

Did I do the right thing????

I can't say if it was the right thing for you or not. Only you would know that after a while. I got layed off in September and my job as a bill collector believe it or not was very stressful. I only worked part time but it had a major affect on my life at home. Since my layoff, I've been much calmer and feel better about things. I want to go back to work, but i don't if you know what I mean! Good luck!

I don't really know anything about you, but I think you did the right thing. You refused "The Box" and you turned down an insulting "raise". Considering all of the variables you listed, I probably would have done the same thing.

Lady, people aren't chocolates. Do you know what they are mostly? Bastards. ####### coated bastards with ####### filling. But I don't find them half as annoying as I find naive bobble-headed optimists who walk around vomiting sunshine.

I believe you did the right thing. If they offered that "raise", it means they value your work; but are not willing to pay for it as they should. You stood your ground as a professional, and that my friend is a plus for you in your development as a worker. Good for you . Don't be surprised if they come back with a better offer.

I work in Bankruptcy. So business is BOOMING!!!!

The problem is I would be working for two paralegals. So I can only see more work. Also, for the pay I would prefer less stress at work, not more. If they had offered me a 2 dollar raise, I might have considered it.

But having to go to night school, the added work, the nominal salary increase, the move to a closet office...it just wasn't worth it to me.

Especially if I leave USA in August.

I think based on the .50 cents alone that you made a good decision to turn it down. Walmart gives us .40 a year raise just for our anniversary with them. Surely they could have done way better for the job being done from you!

Just a thought: could you become a paralegal yourself? Me thinkssss you have what it takes sister.

It would require going back to school. But I am not sure that is what I want to do "as a profession."

Truthfully, if I was to go back to school, I think I would take accounting or study to be a tax consultant.

(then I would have some down time after tax season to travel).

the 50 cent raise is insulting. tell him if you want 50 cents, you'll go to the music store and buy the cd.

If you truly don't want more work (and potentially more stress) and don't plan on being there another year - you did the right thing.

If you potentially would be there longer - you have effectively closed the door on any future promotions (in my opinion).

That is an excellent idea Nutty. I am impressed. I hope you can do that soon sister! Even if you moved outside the US, being a tax consultant can get you job with one of the BIG accounting firms that have offices abroad. They always need folks with experience in US taxation.

You have so much on your plate already. I can't see where an additional .50 per hour would make it worth your while to add more stress to your life. I think you did the right thing.

'Life should NOT be a journey to the grave with the intention of arriving safely in an attractive and well preserved body, but rather to skid in sideways - Chardonnay in one hand - chocolate in the other - body thoroughly used up, totally worn out and screaming 'WOO HOO, What a Ride'

Putting pressure on me!!!!

They said they are shocked I don't want the "promotion."

They said that I do too much work as a receptionist. That when they bring in a legal assistant I will have my responsibilities reduced and thus, I am being paid too much!!!

They can't reduce my salary can they?

My salary would be $13.75 an hour with that 50 cent raise.

Maybe I would get another 50 cent raise after 90 days. So I would make $14.25
