Well, I must confess.

Mine is a 17 inch aluminum Powerbook G4 made in early 2005.

Dinosaur now, huh? :P

I have upgraded the RAM all by me onesies and I recently upgraded to Leopard (latest OSX).

It works for me.

No need to get a new one just yet.

I have not had any issues worth mentioning and although the newer Macbook Pros have made me drool (speed and features), I am quite happy with mine. The test I spoke of is this: travelling with it on boats (extreme hot, cold, humidity and dryness), ridiculous bouncing around and it got put through the wringer. It worked all through that. It has accompanied me on many airplane and road trips, even motorcycle trips. Ha.

No issues.

No viruses.

It has only crashed on rare occasions when doing my graphic design work and trying to load ancient PC files that needed to be updated/converted.

And that rarely happened, as MAC reads all PC files easily enough.

Hey, give me a hammer and I will make it work.

I like PCs too.

I just prefer the illustrious Apple.

:D

As long as you know what you're doing, then, go for a MAC.

I run COMSOL, MULTISIM, MATHCAD, MATLAB, MAPLESIM, and MODELSIM on my machine. They are Windows-based software, so I cannot run it on a MAC. And, scalability, PCs scale better as compared to a MAC.

I know lots of Visual Arts or Art Majors uses a MAC. On the other hand, at the far end where real Engineers are, they use PCs.

Sorry MACs.

Look out for deals next Friday (Black Friday)....not just the Walmart crazy deals that people literally fought over (lol), but Dell too.....

I'm looking out maybe for a new Dell too...but will they even sell em with XP anymore? I have Vista and meh...I really wish I hadn't gotten it with Vista

I was talking to a guy this morning that said Microsoft had released XP again. I did a quick search and determined he was ill informed.

Black Friday may have came early this year. I have heard various reports stating the deals are there already.

HAL 9000 recommends you avoid the Black Friday crowds if really only thinking about a non-blowout laptop. And those tend to be cheapish machines anyway. The price you'll pay for a decent machine that day will be the same you'll pay the Wednesday before.

HAL9000 is wrong.

Dear Nessa,

The 9000 series is the most reliable computer ever made. No 9000 computer has ever made a mistake or distorted information. We are all, by any practical definition of the words, foolproof and incapable of error.

HAL 9000 agrees with Dr. Bohr on this one. For these kinds of applications that are not unique to the engineering sciences, yes- a PC is more appropriate.

Wishing you ten-fold that which you wish upon all others.

I know this is an old topic but I didn't want to start a whole new one..

so the hubby and I just took the plunge and ordered our first ever laptop computer... we got the "Gateway 15.4" Dual Core, 320GB HDD 4GB RAM Laptop Computer+Webcam" including tax and shipping it came to $740, we used the 4 flex pays option...... I hope we got a good deal... I think we have 30 days to try it out and if we don't like it we can return it...

http://electronics.hsn.com/gateway-15-4-du...l_spot1_2*image

i did some quick searching and it looks good for what you get most laptops around that price have a way smaller hard drive and way less RAM...

this is going to be a replacement for my hubby's old slow computer...

For those who don't know how to use a computer, you should get a MAC. Muwhahahaha!

For those who do, you know what you want.

Viruses, Spyware doesn't happen on PCs. It happens on Windows. Therefore, if you use Linux or any variations you are safe. Plus, Linux is way better than a MAC nowaday.

If you check the cnet cheapskate blog, dell is selling a 15" inspiron for $299. Comes with linux but you can get windows for about $350.

Or you can get the windows 7 release that's free until March.

I checked on the Dell site and if I add all the features that the Gateway comes with it comes to about the same price

I can't say anything positive about Dell, just one bad experience after another, but that is just me, my son thinks they are the best company in the world, See practically all the new netbooks are using XP, have a webcam and that audio stuff, but still looking. Prefer buying a computer from my local store, ironically, my local Officemax store has the lowest prices in the country, and if it doesn't work, can take it back.

I purchased an Axim X5 from Dell, one problem after the next, spend hours on the phone with them and get shifted from one idiot to the next. Finally gave up and use it for a paper weight, too small for a boat anchor.

Did buy an Espon printer from OM, crapped out after six months, called the store manager, and while they have a two week limit for in store exchanges, he said, if I still have all the original cartons and literature, bring it back and I will give you a full refund. Told him I didn't feel like fooling around with Epson for months, already did that. I like the idea he is there face to face, so if I had to pound the living ####### out of him, I can, but never had to. Point is, you can't do that over the phone.

We got a Kodak ESP7 with a 50 buck rebate and a 30 buck coupon with a 150 buck purchase, but had to buy a couple of cartridges extra to meet that 150 minimum. While this printer scares the hell out of my wife when you first turn it on, it does a hell of a good job for printing photos, and the cartridges are cheap.

Been sticking with HP because of the excellent support I have received, even a laptop that was seven months after warranty had a new mainboard installed at absolutely no cost to us. Called them and spoke to an intelligent person, received a FedEx box the next day, put the laptop in it, prepaid, and received that computer back in five days with a new mainboard in it. But if HP wants to sell me an inkjet, will have to lower their cartridge price, and I mean, really lower it. Ironic they will sell you a printer with two half filled cartridges in it, cheaper than the replacement cartridges, that extra ink isn't that expensive.

When I was buying a bunch of computer stuff, about 70% of it had to be returned, rush to market is their key, this is how the computer business is, can spend more time fooling around with a computer then getting use out of it.

MS is bugging me daily to upgrade to IE8, did at first, stupid program doesn't even work so I removed it and went back to 7 that does work. If I turn my upgrade off, get constant windows that my computer is not up to date. Why can't they just leave us alone, if it works, don't fix it.
