Hello everybody,

My fiancee is an accountant. She hasn't arrived yet, but when she is able to work here she wants to hit the ground running. So she asked me if I could give her a book that would help her learn US accounting practices. She has a degree in accounting from Russia, but knows that practices will differ here. She eventually wants to become a CPA in California. If anyone could recommend a book, or some books, that would help her make the transition it would be appreciated. I know there is not a "US Accounting for Russian Accountants" book out there, but that would be the holy grail we are looking for, so anything in that direction would be most appreciated. Thank you!!

I am also an accountant in California. I cant recommend a "good book" but I suggest she starts reading up on American GAAP. ALso, the process to get approved by the California BOard of accountancy to be able to sit for the CPA exam is very lengthy. If she wants to fill her time i suggest she reads up on that. You have to have your degree evaluated by a 3rd party, then the board determines if you have filed the educational requirements to be able to write the CPA exam.

She should prob get her degree evaluated sooner then later because the whole process takes 6-8 weeks.

hope this helps.

There is a also a fifth year requirement of school. Does she have that already? If she doesn't, then she could attend a master program to help her sit for the exam at the same time.

Oh and don't be stupid like me! She must do it before she starts school again.

AOS Approved on 10-17-08 (details in profile)

Removal of Conditions on 07-19-10

In this tedious process, we tend to forget that this is all worth it.

I love my hubby beyond anything in this world.

Are you in CA? The CPA licensing requirements vary by state.

I am a CA CPA and I believe the educational requirements are a degree and 12 units of accounting. Not sure if the OP's wife's classes will transfer over.

OP - 1)Google CA State Board of Accountancy for all those licensing requirements. 2)Some books to buy - a college text book in Intermediate Accounting; a CPA exam study guide. She could read the dry guide GAAP guides, but something with real examples would be better, IMO.

Good Luck!

Wow, thanks for all the information, I had almost given up! :)

I am in California, she will want to sit the CA exam, and I was looking at this page and I didn't see where a 5th year was required.

Maybe I should start a new topic, but I was wondering if anyone had any good resources on getting her degree from the University of St. Petersburg evaluated. I think it would be better to do this while she is still over there, so if she needs to get transcripts or whatever it will be easier.

Thanks!!

Mmh, I must have misread. CA is one of the lucky states.

Well you are not exactly wrong.....in CA there are 2 pathways to get liscensed. Pathway 2 requires 1 yr work experience under a CPA and 5yr degree and pathway 1 is 4 yr degree adn 2 yrs work experience.

Bottom line....she needs to get her degree evaluated by an agency that is on the California BOard of accountancy's list.
