We answered a classified ad for a used car and spoke to the guy by phone today. We've arranged to see the car in a mall parking lot on Friday. When I asked him if he was a dealer or a private seller, he said, "The car is from a wholesaler." He didn't speak like he was the owner, and I don't know what wholesaler means in this context. Maybe it's a fleet vehicle? His answers sounded a bit hesitant, and I didn't want to sound stupid by asking too many more questions -- I can still sound stupid but have a lot more fun if I ask in VJ OT Any reason why buying a car that's "from a wholesaler" should set off any alarms? Thanks.

wholesaler in the above means either a repo, fleet vehicle (rental) or even one that was traded in.

it would be beneficial to find out who or what was the previous owner (along with where). one vehicle i remember well turned out to be a rental being sold at a used car lot. it was a geo metro i got back in 92 - it was from hawaii. and sure enough, no antifreeze in it - just water. get the vehicle checked out thoroughly by someone you trust. and be sure to take it for a test drive and listen well. rental car drivers aren't known for being kind to transmissions.
