A reader of the Jamaica Cleaner is proposing that everyone looking to be married in Jamaica undergo DNA testing first.

The Editor, Sir:

Based on the 'jacket' situation in Jamaica, DNA testing may become a way of life. If we do not know who our fathers are we may end up marrying our cousins, brothers, sisters, aunts, uncles, nieces, nephews and even our fathers.

Under these circumstances I would not recommend anyone get married without both partners doing DNA tests to see if they are blood-related. This is one situation where the women can't blame the men for. Ladies if you have only one sex partner every nine months then you won't have to worry about who the daddy is.

I am, etc.,

DAN VASSE

According to Out-of-Wedlock Births by Mark Abrahamson,

When people suspect that a Jamaican child's social and biological fathers are not the same, but the child is publicly presented as the offspring of the social father, the child is called a "jacket" [emphasis added] in local gossip. The imagery implied is that a jacket child is something a husband "wears" to protect his honor.

MORNING EVERYONE JUST GOT FROM JAMAICA LAST NITE :crying::crying:

How was ur trip Nelly? Awhh...Jamaica Jamaica...

Wow....crazy article. I can't see the country being able to afford the testing and the forcing of the testing. They have bigger problems to worry about funding at this point. Interesting concept though!

Hey, Nelly. How was the trip?

why would the country afford the test instead of the parents involved? i would think the country would be making money from those test considering that it would be done at a cost to the parent.

jakeswife

Enforcement. And with free medical care, some of it would have to fall to the country.

it would be irresponsible for the government to consider DNA testing as a '' free medical care claim''

If they followed what this lady said and required it, how could they not?

the government can and should not make decisions based on 1 persons opinion about how to deal with issues that will directly affect the government/law. so saying ""how could they not"" is like saying they should be obligated because someone voices a conern

Just an opinion.......MINE.

i don't blame you for having your opinion but maybe i thought you weren't just voicing an opinion. i thought u had a conviction about how the government should operate because of what you read about a woman and her situation. case in point "how could they not""

Morning from the west coast everyone! Bet some of you are already close to lunch time!

Nice picture Ellsinlove!!!

Good morning everyone...I'm going to try to be productive at work today. ;)

Thanks KK! I didn't want to keep being so anonymous.

Hi Ladies Its almost Friday

Why is it I DONT feel pregnant. I have no morning sickness, no food aversion, only thing is TIREDNESS ah kill me. I dont want to worry, but I am. Should I be worrying

1luv you are sooo fortunate! Hopefully it continues that way for you. I know some women that have absolutely loved the experience since most goes off without a hitch and others who hated it because of all the trouble and sickness. So YAY for you!

The pill is a pain to remember....I've been lucky the times I missed taking at the same time of the day or even forgot a day! When my honey gets here, I'm gonna try an IUD although I've read horror stories about that too.

I have an IUD and I love it - Since I got pregnant on the pill and with a condom, I wasn't taking any chances, lol! No thoughts, no worries!

I love the pic Ell, you are gorgeous!

That's more reassuring to know someone with an IUD success story....those other methods are just too uncertain and we won't be ready for kids for a couple years so I don't want to take any chances.

Thanks Sus for the nice compliment!

MORNING EVERYONE JUST GOT FROM JAMAICA LAST NITE :crying::crying:

Welcome back Ms Nelly! Do we get some pictures and stuff soon? Let you get settled in and back to reality again first though....sorry about that....we all know how hard it is to come home from there!

May I rant a minute? My boss is an idiot! He forgets to take something to another office when it was in his possession and then all of a sudden it becomes a major priority to overnight something that could wait until he goes again next week. And of course, it's up to me to overnight it even though it's not that crucial (a safety training video can wait one more week). What a @#$&*!

There are certain things that I would not trust to a clinic or the free care - DJ is paying for his eye specialist - The clinic and the hospital told him he wouldn't see out of his eye again - The dr. has told him that he should have had a patch, and is hopeful for full recovery. In my opinion, for certain conditions, I would rather spend the money to get the best possible treatment I could - Especially something like DJ's eye = The outcome of that and his vision will affect the rest of his life.

I agree Sus...I'll pay for my health...no gimme nuttin free..Thanks:)

With you there, Yardie. They left me out in the waiting room for hours bleeding out of my ear, my SIL's nose bleeding all over the place cause it was broken, and Andre moaning in pain. The thing about the cost was it was something like $40US for all 3 of us to be seen. Cannot beat that with a stick!

Were you in a car accident JG??

I think JG is saying if the governments REQUIRES a DNA testing be done...how can they not find the medical means to support it?

I think what would happen if the testing was nto for free people would just stop getting married and end up all mixed up anyway

the government enforces testing for people all the time. this does not make it the resposibility of the government to pay for it. i would think that if the parents cannot afford the test well the case would be postponed until the finances are available for the test to be done before the case is taken back to court.if a dna test is necessary to conduct a case well the government should not have to pay for it because an enforcement is given for it to be done.

Or in this case, they just never legally get married.

You didn't read and comprehend all I was saying. If you take those 4 words out of context, I can see where you would make that assumption.

I totally agree! I am just fine with paying for grandma to go to HER doctor that knows all about her and her medical history. Some things you just can't be cheap on sometimes. I am glad that healthcare is "free" for some things cause I believe people should be able to get care for medical things they otherwise would suffer with cause they can't afford it and have no other means...but if you do have means I don't think you should be sucking up resources that you can afford.

I agree with you Sus. But with something like a sinus infection or ear infection or bronchitis - you know you just need an antibiotic and go home to bed so the clinic is okay.
