The Indian Navy has confirmed that one of its warships, the INS Tabar, destroyed a pirate vessel operating off the Somalian coast after coming under attack.

The number of hijacking incidents in the area has drastically increased over recent months. Pirates, often armed with automatic weapons and rocket-propelled grenades, ply the dangerous waters in sleek speedboats equipped with satellite phones and advanced GPS equipment.

A group of pirates even managed to capture the Saudi Sirius Star, which was carrying a cargo of two million barrels worth more than $100m (£67m), off the coast of Kenya.

INS Tabar"At this time we believe the ship is just off the Somali coast," said Commander Jane Campbell, a spokeswoman for the US Navy's Fifth Fleet, stationed in Bahrain. "We don't have a specific indication that the ship is at anchor, but if it follows the pattern of previous attacks, that's what will happen and negotiations will begin between the pirates and the owners of ship."

US Admiral Mike Mullen, the chairman of the Joint Chiefs of Staff, expressed shock over the Sirius Star hijacking.

"I'm stunned by the range of it," said Mullen. The ship's distance from the coast was "the longest distance I've seen for any of these incidents," he added.

Noel Choong, head of the piracy reporting center at the the International Maritime Bureau, told the IHT that at least 88 ships were attacked in the Gulf of Aden during 2008.

"They launch these boats and they're like wild dogs. They attack the ship from the port, from starboard, from all points, shooting, scaring the captain, firing RPGs and forcing the ship to stop," said Choong.

The Indian Navy, which has stepped up its activities in the hostile Gulf, has taken several significant steps to bolster its naval capabilities, including the acquistion of a Russian aicraft carrier and a 16,900-tonne Jalashwa transport ship. The 173-metre-long Landing Pontoon Dock (LPD), currrently the second largest Indian warship in service, is capable of transporting four landing craft, six helicopters and a battalion of 900 soldiers.

In addition, the Indian Navy recently deployed the Nagan, a low frequency towed array sonar system developed by the Naval Physical and Oceanographic Laboratory, in conjunction with Bharat Electronics, Larsen and Toubro, Uniflex Cables and Keltron. According to NPOL Director S Ananthanarayanan, the long-range sonar was "more effective in detecting and classifying the vessels being tracked at variable depths, as noise due to turbulence of own-ship propulsion will not corrupt the signals received from the target."

The MoD has also issued a tender for at least 16 advanced naval helicopters, and plans to form a fleet of advanced diesel submarines.

But when we turn to the Hebrew literature, we do not find such jokes about the donkey. Rather the animal is known for its strength and its loyalty to its master (Genesis 49:14; Numbers 22:30).

i've read so much about somalia and its pirates lately.

Somalia, from 1991 to present, is cited as a real-world example of a stateless society and legal system. From the fall of Siad Barre's government in January 1991 until the capture of Mogadishu by the Islamic Courts Union in June 2006, there was no permanent national government in Somalia, a situation which persists as of 2008. Large areas of the country such as Somaliland, Puntland, Galmudug, Maakhir, and Southwestern Somalia are internationally unrecognized autonomous regions. The remaining areas, including the capital Mogadishu, were divided into smaller territories ruled by competing warlords. In many areas there were (and still are) no formal regulations or licensing requirements for businesses and individuals.

this seems to be the problem, the warlords have control. is anyone going to attempt to do anything? they have lots of oil, so it would be "worth" doing in the eyes of governments.

now that the whole world seems interested in stopping these pirates maybe there is more chance of changing something? i don't see this situation changing without life within the country improving.

Because Clinton had some allergy against allowing one "warlord" (Aidid) to dominate.

Admittedly, that would revert Somalia to a situation as-was under Siad Barré (think Iraq under Saddam), but would definitely have ended the anarchy.

I disagree. Life in the country isn't our problem. Let the Somalis deal with Somalia. World efforts should focus on securing the waters where this is happening. You don't think militaries have secured waterways against piracy in the past? It's been done before, it's just that no one has had to lately. And what's more, today unlike in the distant past, there is no parity in weapons and technology between modern blue water navies and these pirates. None. They can be detected and taken out as long as the resources are directed at the problem.

Man is made by his belief. As he believes, so he is.

The images of Michael Durant and the dead soldiers were what turned the public against that fiasco. It was the first time I called my Senator. My exact words, "Get us the hell out of there". It was my feeling then, and now, that they didn't want, or deserve, to have us there trying to help them.
