We went down to the social security office a week after I arrived here in IL with IR1, waited 4 weeks, no news, so we went down again two weeks ago. We were told verbally that USCIS has verified my data in the system and I should be getting the SSN and SS card in the mail within two weeks. Since two weeks has passed and no news of SS card yet, the green card has arrived in the mail. So, we decided to drive two hours back and forth to go down there AGAIN.

First, we waited about 45 minutes for our number, the woman No 1 who attended to us checked the system and told us the processing is still pending. She referred to the other woman No 2 who accepted our application the first time, she was like "Oh, I got to pull out her file!"

She then went inside to dig out my application forms and told us that USCIS hasn't verified my married name, she couldn't issue my SS card in my married name since the visa was issued in my maiden name (name on my passport). How can USCIS processed my green card and sent me one if they have not verified my name? And, she has my passport, visa, work authorization stamp, birth certificate and marriage certificate, what else does she need to verify? Furthermore, she should have sent me a mail or call me if the name cannot be verified, instead of sitting on my application for six weeks!!

I was very very mad with this woman No 2, she was obviously trying to make life difficult. However, I kept my calm and told the woman No 1 who attended to us that I wanted my SS card processed, in whatever name she choose. So she processed my SS card, in my maiden name. The she gave us a letter that said the card is going to arrive in two weeks. I asked whether a SSN has been assigned that she can give me, "none", she said.

You know what, I am just going to another Social Security office to get the name changed once it arrives. It has been such a pain to deal with this suckers.

It seems government (in any country, not just the U.S.) has a serious problem with being knowledgeable and efficient. For instance, it took me three months to get my PR Card in Canada. Why? Because the government lost my PR Card. The best part is they not only attempted to blame me for that, but they also spelled my name incorrectly on my Social Insurance card and my PR Card.

They've refused to change the PR Card because the Canadian government apparently knows my name better than I do. I've only had it for 29 years, where as they've known me for less than year. I did get my name changed on the Social Insurance card, but only after paying a fee to correct their mistake. If I hadn't paid, they wouldn't change it.

I'm not surprised that the people at the SSA could manage to do this. When we went in, with my green card and my card with the "Not Valid For Employment Without DHS..." to have that notation removed. The person we spoke to basically told me no, I can't have it removed. She even mentioned how she told other's the same day with GC's they couldn't get the notation removed. After about 30 minutes of trying to tell her what the rules said on the SSA website stated we ended up giving her a copy of the rules. She left and when she returned, without as much as an apology stated she never did this before and didn't know if it'd work? grrr...

My advice is go print off the notes relating to issuing a SSN Card to a PR and make them issue the card. That or I'd advise going to an office (if available) in a more populated area where they may have come across other PR's and actually know how to do this part of their job.

Good Luck! :)

The SS card came in the mail a week after we opted to have it done in my maiden name. Now, we are going to another SS office to get it changed to married name, hope we have better luck this time!!

We also had problems getting a SS number and card; we had to go back twice. Same experience: had to physically go over the printed out rules from the website! We were told it was going to be mailed as well...waited and waited until we had no choice but to visit the office again. I put it down to small town USA ignorance, but now I'm wondering...

I emailed the SSA using the "Ask a question" on the SSA website. Someone replied and said a representative could call me. I emailed my phone numbers on Saturday and a representative actually called me Monday morning. He was really nice, checked the status and told me the date SSN was assigned but he couldn't give the SSN to me over the phone. He also gave me instruction on how to request the SSN before the card arrives in the mail. The SS card came in the mail later, with my maiden name.

So we learned that those idiots at the SS office lied about no SSN has been assigned yet because according to the representative who called, SSN has been assigned before our last trip to the SS office! We are going back to SS office tpo change the name on the card to my married name, but we are definitely not going back to the same office to deal with those suckers!
