I'll show you once I find it but I did find out what happened..

SEATTLE — A man whose groin was disfigured by a flesh-eating bacteria infection in prison has accepted a $300,000 settlement from the Washington Department of Corrections.

Charlie Manning told The Seattle Times on Monday that he settled because he wants the ordeal to be over. The prison department said in a statement it settled to save the cost of litigation. The 61-year-old man became ill in 2004 while serving time for threatening a neighbor.

His illness was initially diagnosed as a reaction to cold medicine. By the time he was taken to a hospital, Manning had an internal abscess that required doctors to remove several pounds of flesh from his pelvic region.

Surgeons made a replacement ####### with skin from his thigh.

I found more info...

After he developed an infected hemorrhoid and his symptoms worsened, including a fever, swollen genitals, bleeding from the rectum and a rash on his torso, prison medical staff diagnosed him as having an allergic reaction to cold medicine.

By the time a doctor at Grays Harbor Community Hospital in Aberdeen found Manning had necrotizing fasciitis, or flesh-eating bacteria, and he was flown to Harborview Medical Center in Seattle, the bacteria had spread to his pelvic area.

Surgeons had to remove several pounds of flesh, including his ####### and a testicle, to save his life, DeLue said. A replacement ####### was made with skin from Manning's thigh.

Dr. Muhammad A. Khurshid, head physician at Stafford Creek when the ailment was misdiagnosed, left the prison system soon after Manning filed suit in 2007, DeLue said. The lawsuit alleged that Khurshid's delay in diagnosis let Manning's infection spread.

It's kind of like the "break glass in case of emergency to get replacement #######" you'll see in the future.

hmmmm...no photos of a thigh #######...though not the same situation... :o

Full thickness pedicle grafts from the thigh or adjacent portions involve complicated multistage plastic procedures, and the skin so obtained is often too thick, lacking the necessary elasticity. Profuse sweating of the grafted skin may also be disturbing to the patient.

The ideal solution is to employ a full thickness graft of scrotal skin which is particularly suitable due to its elasticity, redundancy, and abundant drug supply. Like penile skin, scrotal integument is sparsely covered with hair and rich in sebaceous glands.

Repair can be accomplished either by the “sandwich” method (Byars3) of dissecting up flaps of scrotal skin which are approximated over the #######, or by undermining a cuff of scrotal skin and burying the naked ####### in this subcutaneous tunnel (Veseen4). The covered ####### is freed from this bed at a second stage. In those injuries to the ####### which are accompanied by loss of scrotal skin, the same technic may be applied to utilize the adjacent skin in the thigh or abdomen.

Sexually active patients who undergo partial amputation of the ####### for carcinoma of the glans usually are able to maintain satisfactory sexual relationships. Thus, attempts to reconstuct a ####### using rib cartilege or an acrylic prothesis should be reserved for virtually complete amputations.

A scrotal sandwich? And I thought a knuckle sandwich was bad enough.

Actually, the flesh eating bacteria is a rare form of the streptococcus bacteria which is a variant of the strep throat causing agents.

Yeah. Real scary stuff. And, please don't over-use anti-bacterial products because they will cause these bacteria to become immune to it over time. I still question people, and soap companies for making and using anti-bacterial stuff. The body will build immunity towards infections if it's exposed. This will eliminate the mess of super-bugs.

Anti-bacterial should be used as a last resort.

Ugh, did you have to post that today? I have my final on this tomorrow and now I'm thinking of every bacteria that can cause an abcess and going to look them up... UGH! haha :) N.B. totally agree with you. They need to stop making OTC antibacterial soaps ASAP!

I was just thinking...POOR GUY...not only does he have a thigh ####### but he has a sweaty thigh #######. So much for getting a BJ with all that ball sweat.

I think it probably wouldn't sweat... most sebaceous glands would be lost during the skin harvesting unless they left the entire dermal and epidermal layers plus some underlying muscle tissue underneath intact.

On a side note... after the patient heals how much phantom pain/sensation could he feel? And on a sexual side note... that BJ might feel to him for a while like getting sucked on the thigh the tissue came from.

Wishing you ten-fold that which you wish upon all others.

Actually the anti-bacterial soaps kill most bacteria and leave behind the ones that have mutations against the anti-bacterial poisons. This concentrates their numbers by replication.

Yes these bacteria tend to be MRSA forms. Paul Daniels is correct in identifying the condition of necrotizing fasciitis which means having an infection that eats you alive.

I wouldn't think he should feel much. Phantom pain is primarily from the brain rewiring senses to the arm sense part (for instance) after an arm is amputated. This wouldn't really be the case here. You don't feel phantom pain from skin grafts or skin removal procedures, so I doubt you would here.

That's right. B/C the skin graft would remove the majority of the nerve endings. However if the nerves were left intact, as I've seen a couple of procedures that preserve more than upper dermal tissue... then it does take a while for somatosensory cortex to reorganize its receptive fields so that the sensation is matched to the stimulus. ;)

And it would be more like phantom arousal of the thigh... ()

Wishing you ten-fold that which you wish upon all others.
