I have an electronic item for sale no facebook. I keep getting approached by people from the UK, Canada, and Africa. They all want me to communicate through their private emails instead of facebook, and they want to pay an astronomical amount for my item for shipping costs, three ask for my paypal account, one who wants to pay with a personal check, and one wants to pay with a cashier check. My offers have ranged from $900-$500 and my item is only $300.

Two of them want to buy the item for someone's birthday. One of them wants it for themselves. I forget the others reasons. Some of them have specific questions which I already address in my post so I don't know why they ask a second time so seriously.

I don't know why my item attracts only people out of the country who want my item shipped and to pay in another form other than cash as I specified. It's a stereo with a heavy sub-woofer. I'm not interested in selling international because of exchange rates or shipping because of international shipping costs and I don't know why these people would want my item when they could buy a brand new Home Theater System for what they are offering me for my used item. Plus don't the UK ppl take into consideration the conversion factor? My stereo plug isn't going to fit their electrical outlets or play British DVD's?

I am also hesitant because my friend was scammed out of $3,000 by some international people in the UK online with sophisitcated counterfieted U.S. Postal Money Orders.

Do you all think there is a way they could be scamming through paypal too?

I've never had any real issues with PayPal, but then I sell most everything through eBay. I also use PayPal for donations on my web site. I would assume that there is indeed a way to scam using PayPal, but I've never actually heard of this version - usually money order/cashier's check. Probably send you a massive over-payment using an account they've stolen, then expect you to refund the difference. People are idiots. They get an email that OBVIOUSLY is not from PayPal, even though it says it is, and willingly click the link, enter their email address and password, and then later act surprised when their bank account is cleaned out.

I would stay in the US and Canada only, and I would hold their payment for at least a week before sending anything. And accept your asking price only. I would also be tempted to contact PayPal customer service once payment is received to verify that it is indeed genuine.

Lady, people aren't chocolates. Do you know what they are mostly? Bastards. ####### coated bastards with ####### filling. But I don't find them half as annoying as I find naive bobble-headed optimists who walk around vomiting sunshine.

Sounds like a scam, definitely. I'm not sure how it works through paypal but if they are wanting to pay more than the items worth they are probably trying to do that thing they do with money orders where they ask you to send the excess money back to them.

Offering more than you ask is one sign of a scam. Regardless of payment method.

"The fact that we are here today to debate raising America’s debt limit is a sign of leadership failure. It is a sign that the U.S. Government can’t pay its own bills. It is a sign that we now depend on ongoing financial assistance from foreign countries to finance our Government’s reckless fiscal policies."

Should I even respond to these people? One guy contacted me both on facebook and on craigslist.

I'm thinking my item may not sale so maybe I'll pass it on to one of my younger sisters... Which one the 20 year old getting married next Spring or the 14 year old going on 15 but thinks she's 30 like me? LOLZ!

I agree.

My issue was with someone who sold me something "authentic"....stood by his word that it was authentic even as I argued it wasn't. After I followed all channels to get a refund, in the end, I am banned from PayPal until I pay back the amount my credit card, who did stand by their word, refunded to me. It has been 5 years. PayPal still has the nerve to send me e-mails from time to time demanding the money.

So, no, I don't trust PayPal one bit. They are liars.

Same here - I have an eBay store and only accept Paypal - no problems and I have been using it since 2000 both as a buyer and seller. I have also had lots of international buyers from the UK, Canada, Australia, etc. The only problem I have had is that two buyers claimed the items never arrived - both buyers were from France.

But yes your potential buyers sound fishy - I would only sell internationally through eBay and even then be very cautious.
