My search skillz has failed me. I can't find anything viable for Egyptian Arabic that's similar.

Lady, people aren't chocolates. Do you know what they are mostly? Bastards. ####### coated bastards with ####### filling. But I don't find them half as annoying as I find naive bobble-headed optimists who walk around vomiting sunshine.

I dont believe beauty is on the outside, it is the inside. Someone can be incredibly pretty outside and have one of the worst, arrogant, know it all, selfish personalities, and it will make the person purely ugly. And i certainly dont understand how ANYONE can be ok with their husband taking a second wife. There isnt much love or respect in a marriage if a second wife is brought in and wife #1 is cool with that.

In the UK it is diet coke/pepsi. The only time it is Coke Light is in a kebab shop and they've imported it from Europe somewhere! :D

I am a diet Pepsi girl(am drinking it now) and must know every shop in Kathmandu that sells it. Sometimes they get Coke Light but it's interesting, they import it from the UAE and the can is in Arabic. One of the reasons I love Tatopani is it's the only place we found while trekking in the Annapurna area where Coke Light was available(but no diet Pepsi).

Education levels are also marketable. A doctor tells people he's a doctor to get respect and it surely increases his chances to find a wife or girlfriend. That is reality. He doesn't hide his profession to seem humble.

Just to clarify, I have 7 years of college education behind me and will hold a doctorate come May 2009. Somehow, I don't think men really cared about my degree or any other girls when they were being introduced to potential wives. The first thing people ask is "Is she beautiful"... I wish it weren't that way, but it is. At least with most people that I've dealt with. Especially when we don't date...marriages are usually arranged or semi-arranged. Dating, if it's even considered, is with a group and chaperoned.

It svcks to be you then.

The day my husband cared more about my looks than my education/intellect or my sense of human kindness and compassion (which absolutely are way over your league), it would be the day I would let him go his own way.

To each its values

I guess a fugly DEFORMED one-eyed chick like me would be up isht's creek in that vision of the world since I'm not 'perfect'.... But hey! Men sometimes 'settle for less', so there's hope!!!! :star:

Woah, Just woah.

I like the response in the below link. It speaks of how mahr's really shouldn't be very high but affordable to the person paying it and how the Prophet Muhammad (PBUH) did not demand a high mahr for his daughters. He is also reported to have said, "The best woman is the one whose mahr is the easiest to pay." (Reported by al-Haythami)

I have been told that boasting about how or why your mahr is a big issue in Egypt and it causes lots of unauthorized marriages that aren't registered and the women aren't protected.

Mahr Question

Let me see if I understand this correctly. That the high price of Mahr based upon the woman's beauty and status was influenced by the culture not Islam. And it is actually considered the wrong way to base it if the price of the Mahr is based on superficially qualities. Would this type of Marh then be considered Haram?

Dolma, you are a prize far and above most women I know. Never discount your worth.

'Life should NOT be a journey to the grave with the intention of arriving safely in an attractive and well preserved body, but rather to skid in sideways - Chardonnay in one hand - chocolate in the other - body thoroughly used up, totally worn out and screaming 'WOO HOO, What a Ride'

I'm no expert Morocco but it seems like you were understanding it like I was. I can't answer on it being Haram or not.

Sister Len and M4E,

(((HUGS))) to both of you - sorry, this stuff just REALLY gets to me - there's nothing like being told your whole life that you're worthless regardless of how many degrees you have, how many languages you speak, how kind and compassionate you are or even what bedroom tricks you know(if you're given the chance to try 'em out....:lol: ) just because you had the audacity to be born 3 months early, survive, and have some physical reminders of it...

My husband's 'mahr' was the flowers he picked for me and butterflies he caught(and let go) so I could see them - I would rather have that than a bank vault full of gold.

I just opened a fresh 2-liter Diet Pepsi - where's your glasses? :P

OMG Dolma, your Mahr exceeds any dollar amount that someone could pay. That to me is the most precious Mahr I have ever heard of. I am going to have to speak to my husband about that now. Why did you give me money when you could have given me butterflies and flowers? :star:

I guess I just feel that if it is money I want, I can earn that myself. If you really want to show me your love give me something from your heart not your wallet.
