Sorry, I forgot to select quote Narina, but is your origins somewhere in Turkey?

Another question. The value is placed on beauty, but what about a womans virginity? I hear this is of the highest value from the MENA group.

That is interesting. How much value does virginity carry? What exactly IS virginity as defined by Islamic law? And how is it "evidenced" so to speak?

Anyone care to enlighten please? I am learning a lot.

It is. That's why you hear of people killing girls when the man finds out she's not a virgin. It's like the ultimate insult to dupe the guy into thinking you are, but you're not. However, I also believe some girls are wrongfully accused of not being virgins. There was a court case in France, not long ago, and the judge actually judged in the groom's favor. The girl was not a virgin and had to return her entire dowry to the man, who also divorced her.

No, I am not Turkish. Circassians do not come from Turkey. Our homeland is the Caucasus Mountains of modern day Russia. However, most live in diaspora and are in the Middle East now. You can look it up on Wikepedia. They actually have a very good write up on the history of our people.

You might be thinking about the "Circassian beauties" who were kidnapped and/or purchased by Sultans during the time of the Ottoman empire. They were highly coveted for their beauty. They were caught and sold at slave markets oftentimes at prices thousands of times higher than any other women. Turkish Sultans wanted them for their harems. Many of them gave birth to the future Sultans of Turkey. Even the British and Americans wrote about it and marketed beauty products bearing the Circassian name.

Yes, and do the in-laws have the right to inspect the merchandise?

That's where the presentation of the bloody sheet comes in! ;) I always wondered though, couldn't the girl always carry a vile of cow's blood just in case she doesn't bleed when he pops da cherry?

They used to do things like that, I heard. Now they can just have the hymen surgically repaired.

Oh, if a girl is injured and loses her virginity as a result, in some countries, the doctor will actually issue a certificate to show that she broke the hymen due to an injury, fall, etc.

If she doesn't bleed, well, that depends on the man... Some men claim they can tell by the modesty and shyness of a girl if she's been with a guy, and so even if she doesn't bleed, they still believe in her purity and don't make a big deal of it and don't tell anyone...some don't care, they want physical proof... I don't know what to tell you. I'm sure there are some girls out there that really were virgins but got wrongfully accused. I don't know what happens to them... Some men will just make a woman swear on Allah or on a Quran that she's never been with a guy and if she's lying, may Allah curse her. Then if she does this, the man is inclined to believe her and stay with her and leave it between her and God. It's really hard to tell what the couple will do LOL

My husband told me about mahr before we got married. He also told me what was customary in his family. Then he asked me what I would like.. when i told him i was worth 50 mil he choked (TOTALLY KIDDING OF COURSE). Its not about what you are worth, its about what said family can afford and what is the norm as someon else said.

The man preparing our docs asked about it and my husband answered. the man smiled really sweetly and said(in english) you must really be in love.. then back to arabic. He told my husband that almost every foreigner he has seen gets nothing or a dollar. LOL

He thought it was great that my husband was actually acknowledging the mahr with "a foreigner"

hee

Aww...it's true though. Most foreign women don't get any dowry. Lisa honey, you're gorgeous though, you could have asked for anything and I'm sure he and his family would have paid it. And that's not to say he loves you only because you're beautiful...I know you're a complete sweetheart too.

Well if you are going to return to the USA, then you are protected by our laws here. If you need child support or alimony you will get it. That's really the purpose of Mahr, to insure the woman has a means of financial support if the marriage were to go wrong.

VJ Hours - I am available M-F from 10am - 5pm PST. I will occasionaly put in some OT for a fairly good poo slinging thread or a donut.

Timeline: 13 month long journey from filing to visa in hand

If you were lucky and got an approval and reunion with your loved one rather quickly; Please refrain from telling people who waited 6+ months just to get out of a service center to "chill out" or to "stop whining" It's insensitive, and unecessary. Once you walk a mile in their shoes you will understand and be heard.

Thanks!
