I don't think that anyone is ignorant to the fact that this goes on in MENA countries.

Being raised as an American woman, however, I would not be involved in it since it completely conflicts with my own morals and values.

I have to agree with the above.

As stated..its not the US culture. It does happen in many other countries (Not just MENA) arranged marriages while they do turn my stomach, happen.

I think many of us are getting defensive because we are putting an "I" to it. "I would never let that happen" Well, that’s just it. The question was how mahr worth is determined...not how YOU determine it to be good or bad. :P

It may outrage many of us. But it is what it is. The question first asked was answered. No we have moved onto personal opinions.

Mine personal opinion...I'd never want to marry a stranger nor have him pay me what he thinks I'm worth nor have him think of me as property. I want know the person I'm marrying and I did just that when I married my hubby. We have made a commitment to care for one another thru ups and downs and money whether given to me before marriage or during is a give and take in the growing of our life together. (p.s.--I do take visa, mc and amex as Ash said... )

Yeah I mean...how high would a price have to be to not be totally insulting? I'd be so pissed if I was only offered $500, $10,000, etc! I'm worth millions dammit!!!

I'm only speaking from experience of how I've seen the "worth" calculated.

Some couples agree to $1. That's their choice and maybe their families don't care and they accept that.

That doesn't mean that the girl is only worth a dollar though. It might mean that both families are poor and they don't want to be bothered with the whole thing. It could also mean they are extremely religious and pious and don't want to have dealings with money unless absolutely necessary. There's not set calculation. Only a generalization. An estimate.

Sorry, I forgot to select quote Narina, but is your origins somewhere in Turkey?

Another question. The value is placed on beauty, but what about a womans virginity? I hear this is of the highest value from the MENA group.

'Life should NOT be a journey to the grave with the intention of arriving safely in an attractive and well preserved body, but rather to skid in sideways - Chardonnay in one hand - chocolate in the other - body thoroughly used up, totally worn out and screaming 'WOO HOO, What a Ride'

Yes, and do the in-laws have the right to inspect the merchandise?

Mahr is essentially alimony paid upfront.....

Again, if I only got $10,000 in alimony I'd be pizzed! :innocent:

But alimony is not figured by how much you think you are worth...it figured according to the lifestyle you lived during marriage. If you were married to a millionaire you would obviously get alot more per month than if you were married to an average citizen. Mahr pretty much works the same way.

Some may take as an insult if they are not offered a what they feel would be a large amount but you have to consider if that amount is considered large to the family paying it.
