Hiya

Could anyone with experience of moving to AZ (maybe specifically Tucson?) please share their experience of getting a license there? I'm a little concerned as I've read of others experiencing difficulties getting licenses that aren't restricted to the I-94 expiry date and that Tucson local office being longer than most when it comes to AOS processing due to it being so close to the border. Life would be very difficult if I am not allowed to drive until my GC comes through! I currently hold a full UK license, if that's any help in replying.

TIA,

Tish

If it helps - in most states your UK license will allow you to drive - most for up to 1 year...

Danke Dir!

I thought this might be the case, as it works that way for USCs in the UK, and they usually have a reciprocal arrangement. How do I find out if this is the case in AZ?

the easiest way is to ask any trooper / policeman you see sipping coffe in local Dunkin or 7/11 store :)

or call AZ DMV

your UK drivers licence, is valid in the US as whole, or not at all.

since it is valid in the states it dosent really matter where in the states you might happen to be.

the duration of its validity is not limited either, however - the way it works in the US is that you cannot, BUY, INSURE, or REGISTER a car with out holding a local state issued drivers lisence.

if you are planing to drive someone elses car, who has insurance coverage for you you can do that for as many years as you want.

if you wish to own your own car, and isure it for your self - you must have a local state issued lisence.

since in the US other then a pasport the state drivers lisence constitutes for an official ID card each state has its own regualtions. these are easily found on the DMV website:

<a href: http://www.azdot.gov/mvd/faqs/scripts/FAQs...mp;Keyword=> http://www.azdot.gov/mvd/faqs/scripts/FAQs...=1&Keyword= </a>

i am a USC, but i had no prior driver lisence other then my forign one. i used it for a while untill i needed to buy my own car.

i never got pulled over but it was perfectly legitimate wherever in the US i was.

good luck.

sorry about the double answer

i also found this

http://mvd.azdot.gov/mvd/formsandpub/viewP...ormInfoKey=1410

it clearly sais - I-94 form with your photo as a primary source of ID and ssn card as secondary.

this is all you need to go and be tested and aplly for a lisence.

so once you get your SS card you can run over and start for your lisence (its a good idea to read the drivers manual for the state and know the silly little quirks before you go to be tested...) then a road test.

good luck

Thank you all for your answers so far. I'd found the 'what you need' page on the AZ DMV website, but it doesn't address the issue of the restricted time the license is valid for. Also, I've been reliably informed that AZ law states you must apply for an AZ license within 10 days of becoming a permanent AZ resident. Since I become a permanent resident once we marry and apply for our AOS, would the AOS NOA1 suffice to lift the 3 month restriction? I can't be a permanent resident in AZ, meet their state laws and drive on my UK license, can I?

AZ DMV will not accept NOA's as proof of residency, you will be ok to drive on your UK licence for 12 months after entry into the US.

You will need a SSN BEFORE you can apply for an AZ Licence

Hello, I'm currently with my wife here in Tucson. I'm Canadian citizen and I'm adjusting my AOS status right now. I'm curently using my Canadian driver's license. I'm the only one who's driving here because my wife doesn't have a license yet. I was told by the Arizona MVD that I'm eligible to drive here in Arizona using my Canadian Driver's License as long as the vehicle that i'm driving was registered and insured here in Arizona. I was told by the lady few days ago from MVD tru phone that I need to bring my passport with Visa on it or I-94 that there's an expiration date on it so that if I passed my written exam they will give me a license depends on how long my visa/I-94 will expires.

Hope that helps....Call ARIZONA MVD

"Have faith in God, Jesus answered. I'll tell you the truth. if anyone says to this mountain, Go, throw yourself to the sea, and that does not doubt in his heart but believes that what he says will happen. it will be done for him. Therefore I'll tell you, whatever you ask for in prayer, believe that you have received it, and it will be yours" (MARK 11:22-24)

OK, but see that contradicts the AZ state law of being required to apply for an AZ license within 10 days of becoming a permanent resident in the state. Or do we not become permanent residents until the AOS process is complete and we have our 2 year GCs? If we are permanent residents by virtue of being married to an AZ permanent resident and in waiting for completion of our AOS, I don't understand how we won't end up with traffic tickets should we get a routine stop! I can't help but feel that one department has one rule, another has another and not having something in writing from the DMV could cause problems should we get pulled - after all, traffic cops aren't exactly up to date on current visa status regulations and the DMV!

We were specifically told by our lawyer that the receipt we get from the papers being filed, (I assume that is the NOA) my husband can go in and get his drivers license. He also said if the person behind the counter says no, that the person doesn't know the rules and to talk to their supervisor, because it is allowed....I hope its allowed...and I will be sure to try as hard as I can :)

So after some research and finding this webpage http://mvd.azdot.gov/mvd/formsandpub/viewP...ormInfoKey=1410 It clearly states that you need the EAD to get a DL. SOme sites I saw the original receipt of the EAD works, but I did not see that on this document...maybe that is what my lawyer really meant

I can tell you what worked for me:

Go to the DMV with your SSN, your Marriage License, your I94 and your Passport and your UK Drivers License.

The DMV will make you take the test (big joke and super easy) and you will received your ID/License, valid until the expiration date of your I94. You get married and file for AOS right away, and take your EAD to the DMV and get your new DL (this time valid for a year). After your receive your conditional GC you go to the DMV AGAIN, pay another $10 and get a DL valid for 2 years.

have fun it tucson. get a gun, a lock for your steering wheel and an alarm system for your house :)

Ok, my husband got his Drivers License today.

With just the receipt of his I-485 they gave him a 6 month license. It doesnt say temporary or anything like that.

After hours and hours...probably days of trying to find out if AZ allows it, and not finding anything, we decided to go in an believe what the lawyer said and play stupid rather than argue. But there was no question. They took the receipt and took a copy...filled out his form...And since his Canadian license was expired for over a year he had to take the written and road test. If it was less than a year he would of only taken the written.

So to me, its a unwritten rule that they probably don't publish on purpose, or maybe it has to do with the Real ID act...dunno just glad he got it!!!
