I could be wrong - but I don't recall any black characters in Neighbours. Period.

Even the criminals were white.

I don't recall any black characters in Friends, either - and New York is slightly more diverse than Ramsay Street in Erinsborough, Australia.

Ayesha Tyler had a recurring role late in the series. I remember it being notable at the time for that very reason.

There was the Asian lady Ross almost married....until he called her by Rachel's name at their wedding...

Oh yeah, she was quite ugly but no, that's not the one he called by Rachel's name. It was the other British one with a gonzo nose.

Aaaaaaaaand, Ross also dated a black lady. She was borderline white because she didn't act black and was some kind of scientist but she was black and that's all that matters.

Well unlike the US, Australia does not feel the need to pretend to be PC correct by including a minority in every screen shot or commercial. It would be like BET throwing in a white guy to be perceived as being diverse.

You don't think that the content of the show reflects the biases of the program makers?

Aboriginals don't tend to live in the burbs. That is their choice and not some white conspiracy to keep them out.

According to the Internal Revenue Service, the 400 richest American households earned a total of $US138 billion, up from $US105 billion a year earlier. That's an average of $US345 million each, on which they paid a tax rate of just 16.6 per cent.

Well Larry David also created Curb Your Enthusiasm, which has a lot of black and ethnic characters.

In one season, they shelter an African-American family from New Orleans family named "the Blacks".

So why are they worried about giving the "wrong impression"? Sounds like it's not a wrong impression after all.

But that doesn't have anything to do with inherent biases in soap operas.

Soaps generally don't represent reality anyway.

No Aboriginals live in those areas. So why would they throw them in for the sake of it.

I was joking! Hence the :P. Mark said black characters in friends, specifically, and you responded about an Asian character.

The Affirmative Action episode of Curb being one of the funniest (which was season 1 or 2 I think)
