Our 8 year old is questioning the veracity of the Big Guy in Red. When did you have the talk and how did you do it?

You say that Santa passed away many years ago - and that his faithful (slightly unbalanced) servant Black Peter has taken over.

Black Peter takes away children who question the myth ;)

I don't have kids either. I do have nieces and nephews though. The other day my nephew, he's 9, suggested I buy something rather expensive. I said, "I don't have the money for that." To which he responded, "well, just ask Santa for it." I said, "I don't really think that will work." To which he responded, "are you suggested Santa isn't real and won't bring you what you ask for?" I wasn't sure if it was cute that he still believed in Santa or scary considering he's 9. I've tossed around the idea of, when I finally do have kids, not even telling them about Santa. Sometimes I wonder if it's worth them living 10 years of their life with a delusion that Santa is real.

Just couldn't stay my @ss away!

I don't have kids yet, but I think my parents told me it didn't exist when I was 6 or 7. Which was right in the time where older kids at school were trying to tell us that it didn't exist.

OK, new thread. How do we break the news to Sister Fracas?

I don't think parents should have to break the news to their kids - they'll eventually figure it out. If they ask if Santa is real, you say, "Of course he is real...he is the Spirit of Christmas." Then let them chew on that for awhile.

My daughter kind of figured it out at about 8. What I told her was that Santa really existed and his name was Chris Kringle..and that we keep his spirit alive by keeping up the tradition.

While she knows santa isn't real, we still play with it, and she enjoys it just as much as she did before.

Yeah, I want to emphasize that Santa epitomises the Magic of Christmas, and that it's a fun thing to believe, whether it's true or not. She has little cousins and I think she'll see how special it is to them and understand why we have this tradition.

That's what we had in mind. Cheers!

I'd tell my kid that Santa is getting too old to fly the sleigh - so he runs a franchise operation, allowing parents to dress up as him and use his name.

My mum sat me down at 11 and told me that Santa, the tooth fairy and the easter bunny weren't real. She figured that it would be better to tell me all at once and get it over wirh, kind of like ripping a plaster off quickly!

I told her I had known for a couple years lol. I can't remember when I found out and how but it was probably in the playground.

Anything is better than the way I found out..

Bullies at the back of my school bus got their kicks out of telling us younger kids that Santa didn't exist.. they would laugh when some unknowing kid would start to cry

At some point, my sister and I couldn't help but notice that my dad and Santa, as evidenced by the To/From labels, had identical handwriting. When we mentioned this, my dad just smirked.
