Wfleitz,

The packet system for immigrantion is long gone, but the packet 3 and packet 4 terms linger and do still bear a resemblance to the old days especially for the K visas. More descriptive terms would be the visa application package and the visa interview notice.

In the case of immigrant visas the terminology is getting stretched really thin since some of the visa application materials are now submitted to the NVC before the case goes to the consulate. Sometimes you'll see reference to packet 3.5 as a result.

I have read about Packet 3 and Packet 4 on many posts and am wondering what these are? What do these include? My application is an I-130 for IR1 and have completed everything with the NVC. I thought the final step was an interview. Thanks for the info.

Thanks again Yodrak.

My wife received a "packet" from NVC about two months ago which required that she send a form (DS-230, I believe) back to the NVC and then to prepare her birth certificate, police certificate, translations, etc. I assume this would be the visa application packet.

Then just a couple of days ago she received a letter from the embassy with instructions about the interview, medical appointments, etc. I assume this is the visa interview notice.

I was reading on-line here about all these packet 3s and packet 4s and was getting confused that maybe we didn't get everything. I appreciate the clarification.

You are right what you said. She will need to take her birth certificate, police certificate, your marriage certificate, the medical report to the Embassy for the interview. Make sure, she photocopies birth certificate, marriage certificate, police certificate. The embassy returns the originals and keep the photocopies.

I-130 Timeline with USCIS:

It took 92 days for I-130 to get approved from the filing date

NVC Process of I-130:

It took 78 days to complete the NVC process

Interview Process at The U.S. Embassy

Interview took 223 days from the I-130 filing date. Immigrant Visa was issued right after the interview
