I haven't bothered to have my US passport updated to my married name. We didn't have any trips planned so I just didn't bother.

We now have a trip planned for March and of course the ticket is in my married name.

Is it really necessary to update the passport? Is it going to be too much hassle at the ticket counters etc if I just carry a copy of our marriage certificate?

I just hate spending 75 bucks to change the damn thing over when I'm also going to be sending the SOB's another $600 for lifting of conditions in January.

Just wait til it expires and book your tickets in whichever name is on your passport. Tickets and passport have to match.

I might not change my passport either - I would however be inclined to change my ticketing information to reflect what is on my passport. I couldn't find the link, but you could have issues traveling under a different name than what is in the passport (ticket vs passport). (This would be the path of least hassle, especially in foreign countries.)

My wife was in the same situation. But I'm not a lady so... oh well. Have a nice trip.

So I could call the airline and have them change the ticket to match the passport?

*already bought the tickets*

yeah, you gotta try. The security peeps are the ones that don't like passports and tickets that don't match.

I kinda went through the same thing... to the best of my knowledge the airlines will not change the name on the tickets. You could cancel that ticket and rebook it to match your passport. They will charge you a cancellation fee, however.

I'd update the passport.

Funnily, we just booked a trip for Feb. 09 and are bringing my oldest son. I booked the ticket in the name he uses, but when I went to apply for the passport I realized on his birth cert his name is hyphenated (we never use his full name). I called the airlines and they said the name on the ticket must match the passport. So I had to change the name on his ticket. Thankfully, since I was just adding an extra last name, they didn't charge me a fee.

After I got married, I had my name changed on the passport which amounted to sending it in and getting a stamp in the back that had my new name. It looked like I could have made a stamp and done it myself. Even though my new name was stamped in the back, it was still always a bit of a pain to explain to airline people that my name changed and that the new name was in the back. Even though it was completely legit, most airline people didn't like the fact that my name, as it appeared on the ticket, didn't match the name next to my picture....that they had to flip through the passport to find the correct name.

Last Christmas when we went to England, I was informed that my passport, with a stamped name change wasn't going to be accepted much longer and that I would have to replace it. I don't know if they even offer that service anymore. Before we went to Peru this year, I couldn't find my passport, so I just went ahead and got a new one with my married name and it was a lot less hassle having the passport and ticket in the same name.

I found my old passport, and even though I had 4 more years left on it, I'm glad I had it changed. If I had a passport in my old name, I'd buy the tickets in the old name as well.

Hi,

I think all you have to do is bring your marriage certificate along with your passport to prove you were married and just haven't changed your name/passport yet - I wouldn't either, it's expensive. I do suggest you call the airline though or possibly your embassy and double check this info. One thing you can be sure off is that you will most likely NOT be able to travel when the names on your ticket and passport are not the same.

Good luck!
