My future wife, Iryna, is soon to come over from Ukraine. While waiting for our K-1 to finish she completed her school program with a Masters in Logistics. For the most part I am pretty confident that the degree will be able to carry over to the U.S., but she should probably take a couple English-writing-grammar classes. Her ability with the language is pretty good, but she feels that she could learn it better.

So my main concern I'm hoping for help with is, How many people have or have had their significant other come over and their degree crossed over properly with them?

It'd be a shame to throw a masters degree to the wind.

Thanks for the help everyone.

That's exactly what my wife told me. "Because you like so stupid man and I more smart than all stooopid people here in U.S."

For the OP, degrees have to be certified. There's a whole bunch of posts and threads on this topic already. Do a little searching or scroll through page 2. Basically you send it to some certification folks and they figure it out for you. As for actually geting a job, it may or may not help. Same as the "piece of paper" here in the U.S. from a U.S. school. All depends on the job, the type of degree, etc.

I have a friend here who just finished this process. It took several months here, and several months to get the required certified transcripts from Ukraine. Not sure if this is typical or not, but the delay in Ukraine seemed to be a result of actually locating the transcript - and the fact that she was now far away, and so couldn't appear periodically to move the process along. You will be shocked  to hear that a modest fee was required at some point to clear the log jam, wherever it was...

I remember reading you were a lawyer in Russia. If so, have considered doing the 1 year LLM program at any ABA law school, Golden Gate comes to mind as they always had a lot of "international students". That 1 year LLM in something like US legal studies allows you to sit for the California Bar Exam if you are still interested in that kind of work.

Sounds like the degree is something that can easily convert, given the info Sat provided. Just be happy it isnt a medical degree that process is a whole other nightmare. We are working on getting Elena ready to take the TOEFL exam then the first part of the Boards then its time to apply to Dental school.

I taught English in Russia to many professionals who had all the top degrees and qualifications (including degrees in English) to work in American /British firms, but couldn't write a legible English sentence. Thus they would get passed over for the job they wanted.

Your wife is very smart to plan on taking an English grammar class!

If the degree is in a regulated or licensed profession then the challenges are greater... If the immigrant has an accounting degree, there is no certification requirement (unless they wish to take the CPA exam, for example) and it is totally up to the employer to decide...

YMMV

Fill out a FAFSA and you should be able to get Stafford loans and Federal Grad Plus loans. Unless you can find a decent job you might as well as borrow the money in a slow economy, finish your schooling and then pay it back with an attorney salary.

We already have too many loans, house, cars, boat...I do not want any more loans till we get rid of at least one of what we already have :)))

Especially at this economy...

I would love to continiue my education of course, but it will take a year or 2 before i can decide whether i am ready for another loan or not..In my culture it is scary to take a loan,i am still getting used to the fact of impermanence...

You should check out the way American debt system really works. Knowledge is power.

Here is my story. I've lived problem free life, payed my taxes. One day I decided to marry this girl. But to do so would require her to come to US of A, and so it started. My problem free live turned in to free problems from USCIS! Sure things turned to unsure, certain dates turned to aproximation within months. All logical thinking was out the door, as I filed my papers withing famous Vermont Centre!

Don't worry about taking out too many loans. Pretty soon the govt. is going to bail us all out and all debts will be forgiven. I think under Obama we're all going to get free money and not even have to work anymore! It's going to be so great!

Iryna just took the TOEFL exam, she was a little embarassed by her results (which weren't bad at all apparently). My little over achiever. She just didn't understand some of the question that had to do with things like Iodine and Thyroids and stuff she had never even heard of in the english language. I really didn't expect questions like that.

I just helped someone study for this exam, and it's harder than I, as a native English speaker, would have thought. The written portion didn't seem to throw her too much since it was multiple choice, but the "interview" part was hard because she had to come up with essay type answers on the fly. So don't let her feel too bad about it, I doubt many native speakers would do well on this exam.
