According to the Internal Revenue Service, the 400 richest American households earned a total of $US138 billion, up from $US105 billion a year earlier. That's an average of $US345 million each, on which they paid a tax rate of just 16.6 per cent.

Diesel costs almost double the price compared with regular gasoline.

Perhaps someone can explain that - I thought in distillation you got more of the heavy fractions (i.e. it should be cheaper). Unless the difference is all tax.

More taxes on diesel than gas.

Nope, let GM fall.

Why should I want to bail out an auto maker that made closed-door deals with oil companies to prevent Americans from progress when it comes to fuel efficiency -- efficiency they could have been reaping the benefits of if GM had the American people in mind over being Uncle Scrooge diving into his money bin. They chose to screw Americans by producing these gas guzzling cars while destroying their biggest progress on improving these standards which would have had them leaps and bounds over even Toyota and Honda had they continued to pursue it. Then we want to turn around and bail them out with tax money after taking it up the ### from them? #### GM. I don't care how many jobs are at stake. Americans seem to have a penchant for taking it straight up the crapshoot when it comes to stuff like this and it makes no sense. Don't we actually learn from mistakes?

Let the companies like Toyota and Honda that "get it" succeed. Let them build plants out here, let them give more job opportunities out here. I'm all for protectionism when a company is playing fairly in the local market. These people were not, and took advantage of Americans with the "American" brand nonsense. No surprise, while getting taken advantage of, plenty of people still wave the American flag and want to bail out a company. At very least I can always be assured that if I make an American company I can stick my foot so far up a good portion of American asses yet they'd still want to bail me out.

Ignorant post.

Let the companies like Toyota and Honda that "get it" succeed.

Toyota's profits are down 69%, despite the fact that they "get it".

I wouldn't be surprised if Japan had to "rescue" them too.

** Toyota.

While all auto manufacturers are suffering, it's clear why GM is suffering the most. They suck.

No they don't suck. They just underestimated the sedan / medium sized car market. Overseas GM is clearly competing well in both these segments.

who would buy a ford and a gm? Japanese cars are better a little expensive but worth till its last breath..

ask my boss - he has a honda and already had major recall work done on his civic, along with having to replace tires due to the design flaw that started the recall.

I bought a brand new civic for the wife and it is a piece of #######.

It can't be. It's Japanese.

The price of oil only shot up a few years ago. So you cannot sit here and say GM and Ford sided with oil companies. With the price of fuel here at $1.90 per gal, it would now take over 6 to 7 years to get your money back when buying a prius.

Actually it was much longer than that. 15+ years, and that wasn't including a battery pack replacement.

They sure must be selling lots to drop as far as they are and still be #1, eh? None of the Japanese cars are dropping off this badly:

Let me spell it out for you. GM makes LOTS of cars. Chevy, Pontiac, Buick, GMC -

many different models. They don't have to include the "top 5 selling cars" to sell

more cars.

http://news.yahoo.com/s/nm/20081031/bs_nm/us_usa_autosales_2

General Motors Corp, Ford Motor Co and Chrysler LLC are expected to lead the U.S. sales declines, but all six of the top sellers -- including Toyota Motor Corp, Honda Motor Co Ltd and Nissan Motor Co Ltd -- were expected to report lower sales.

On an unadjusted basis, Edmunds.com expects GM sales to drop 40.7 percent, Chrysler to drop 38.1 percent and Ford to drop 34.7 percent. It expects a 29.2 percent drop at Nissan, a 17.2 percent slide at Honda and a 15.5 percent fall at Toyota.

While all auto manufacturers are suffering, it's clear why GM is suffering the most. They suck.

####### is wrong with you? This is an Edmunds ESTIMATE dated October 31. Why don't you

post the actual numbers? Analysts were shocked when Toyota announced a 69% fall in

quarterly profits.

Toyota isn't going down. Neither is Honda.

Maybe profits are going down across the board, but those two are still the best sellers. So indeed, they do "get it", while Ford is playing catch-up and GM is clearly left behind.

You and the rest of the anti America sector hope so.

Yet.

SVRT does not understand the concept of no one is buying cars. In such a market the people who have to buy a car will most likely buy the cheapest to get around. Ruling both Honda and Toyota out. Funny that people forget how cheap and ####### the first Toyota's and Honda's were. Their lower price was their initial selling point.

Someone who needs a car yet is struggling, like the majority of Americans, is going to be price conscious. Cheap and Honda does not go together well.

SVRT hates America.

Since I don't care how they're doing overseas, it's very clear their GMC Sierra-like mentality is one of the good reasons why they suck ###. And don't get me started again on those pieces of ####### Saturn cars. I've never seen auto mechanics swear so much fixing cars than I ever did see it happen with Saturns.

Toyota and Honda clearly have their ducks in a row when it comes to cars most people drive.

They have the cheap cars, Honda Civic, Honda Accord, which are very good cars, last a long time, and have a very low depreciation rate. Toyota has the long standing Camry, has the Prius which is gaining quite a bit of popularity, as is the Yaris, and even their subsidiaries are seen quite a bit on the road now, such as the Scion xB, Scion tC, Lexus models of all sorts, and I'm seeing quite a bit more Lexus RX400h hybrid SUVs over Ford Escapes, which is surprising given the Lexus hybrid SUV is around $40,000 - $50,000, while the Escape Hybrid is more financially manageable for your average salary.

Quite simply put, there's a reason why Japanese cars are better. The American brands focused far too much on controlling their market versus evolving it. It's the epitome of American business today. Look no further than the broadband infrastructure as to the largest comparable model regarding American-based companies.

The big three made a bad call and we should loan them the money. The other thing is as mawilson said Toyota and other foreign manufacturers, who build cars here, are also struggling and will probably use some of this money themselves. A total collapse of the auto industry will be bad news for America.
