who would buy a ford and a gm? Japanese cars are better a little expensive but worth till its last breath..

ask my boss - he has a honda and already had major recall work done on his civic, along with having to replace tires due to the design flaw that started the recall.

Recalls on my Hondas have been taken care of. Can't complain.

Wishing you ten-fold that which you wish upon all others.

Well it would seem we're in a once-in-a-lifetime situation here - so it would seem prudent to ask whether more (and more importantly - more lasting) damage to the economy will result from not propping up these companies rather than letting them fail.

Letting GM fail = Great Depression 2

 give me a break, u r saying that the american economy rests on GM's shoulders??

About 5% of the economy - 5% of US employment and 4% of GDP.

and what other companies are under gm?

I bought a brand new civic for the wife and it is a piece of #######.

According to the Internal Revenue Service, the 400 richest American households earned a total of $US138 billion, up from $US105 billion a year earlier. That's an average of $US345 million each, on which they paid a tax rate of just 16.6 per cent.

Why should I want to bail out an auto maker that made closed-door deals with oil companies to prevent Americans from progress when it comes to fuel efficiency -- efficiency they could have been reaping the benefits of if GM had the American people in mind over being Uncle Scrooge diving into his money bin. They chose to screw Americans by producing these gas guzzling cars while destroying their biggest progress on improving these standards which would have had them leaps and bounds over even Toyota and Honda had they continued to pursue it. Then we want to turn around and bail them out with tax money after taking it up the ### from them? #### GM. I don't care how many jobs are at stake. Americans seem to have a penchant for taking it straight up the crapshoot when it comes to stuff like this and it makes no sense. Don't we actually learn from mistakes?

The price of oil only shot up a few years ago. So you cannot sit here and say GM and Ford sided with oil companies. With the price of fuel here at $1.90 per gal, it would now take over 6 to 7 years to get your money back when buying a prius.

Filing bankruptcy does not mean closing the doors.

How many airlines have filed for reorganization to come out and still operating.

Bankruptcy would be a good thing for GM, allow the corp to restruct its debts consolidate and shed the burdening legacy costs.

GM would emerge a more viable company.

Let the companies like Toyota and Honda that "get it" succeed.

Toyota's profits are down 69%, despite the fact that they "get it".

I wouldn't be surprised if Japan had to "rescue" them too.

Mind adding the other list of auto manufacturers to the list who are taking a nose dive in profits? It might be due to some other factor. Hmm...

GM and Ford build small cars in other countries becuse the cars sell there.

Here everyone wants Hummer or an Excursion, small cars do not sell in the U.S. why would they want to build them here?

Both Ford and GM sell nice and reliable compact cars overseas. We should loan them the money with the condition that they will start building and selling them here. In the short term the UAW needs to step out of the way and allow the two manufacturers to import these small cars from other countries. The other thing is that they have great diesels engines overseas which get better mileage than the dam prius. These engines should have been here yesterday.

See you are thinking about this in the wrong way. Let people buy their hummers or trucks for recreational use. What I would do is add a tax to all of these vehicles. Add a 20% tax on the sale price and a $1,000 annual tax to pay for the extra wear and tear on the roads.

Second of all fuel is too cheap in the US. Add a $1.00 federal gas tax to gasoline. This will also pay for the roads which desperately need upgrading.

I'm saying no-one is immune, not even your beloved Toyota.

GM's troubles started earlier, is all.
