CEO's tell Mayor of Chicago: Huge layoffs are coming, Chicago economy about to be buried

Mayor Daley said Wednesday he’s been warned by a parade of corporate CEOs that a blizzard of job cuts are about to bury the souring Chicago economy.

“Huge layoffs are coming in November and December. And next year, there’s going to be [even more] huge layoffs. All the corporation CEOs have come in to tell me. That’s just the beginning. It’s not their end result,” Daley told reporters after a City Council meeting.

“Each one of them tell me what they’re laying off and they’re going to double that next year. So, you’re talking about huge numbers of permanent layoffs…It’s going to have a huge effect upon all businesses relying off of one another. And for cities, counties and states, your revenue is going to keep coming down….Some of these local governments are going to be in jeopardy. They won’t have enough money to [meet] their payroll. It’s that serious.”

And CTA is meeting right now to strike a fare-hike for the second time this year.

:bonk: :bonk: :bonk: :bonk:

Pretty soon it will be nearly as expensive as driving a car in the city. I can only imagine what that will mean for the condition of the streets.

Wishing you ten-fold that which you wish upon all others.

But when we turn to the Hebrew literature, we do not find such jokes about the donkey. Rather the animal is known for its strength and its loyalty to its master (Genesis 49:14; Numbers 22:30).

How much does it cost now? When I lived there it was the most expensive public transport in the country

Right now its wacko- and set up as a system to charge you the max price for paying cash.

The Bus: $1.75 o/w + $0.25 transfer

The Train: $2.00 o/w + $0.25 transfer

Monthly pass is like $75

Chicago Card is a cash card with a $2 bonus on every $20 you input...

Today's meeting would remove that bonus, increase the monthly pass to like $90, and increase fares by $0.25. Pretty lame considering the system is nowhere near the NYC MTA in coverage and service availability.

When I lived there all rides were $1.50 with (I think) a free transfer. This was the mid-nineties so I guess it hasn't gone up that much.

But yeah, it would be annoying going to places like NYC and seeing how much better it was for less money. We pay 75 cents for the bus here in LA!

Yes I remember those days. sigh

Problem is, that today you have less service coverage (hours/frequency) and an infrastructure that needs a complete overhaul. I do not see this city getting the 2016 Olympics if the IOC really decides to tour the city on the CTA.

I am comparing that nugget system to system with a city like Madrid, that I believe still has o/w fares at 1 Euro.

Obviously its an old system with not as much investment as NYC, but the #1 problem is in horrible management and more efficiency leaks throughout the system than any other metro system I've been on. Out of like a zillion.

Still I can't complain about many employees' attitudes and conduct- excellent contrast to other operators in other systems.

Just have a look at the fares on the London Underground and you will feel MUCH better. :P

Yeah I remember those too... but again that's always subject to relativism... but lucky me I've only used it as a visitor.

Wishing you ten-fold that which you wish upon all others.
