oh hmmm...no white hairs for me :P

so you're safe if you have no grey or white hair?

so lucky! i'm not even 30 yet! but in answer to your question, i think so yes, you can keep on denying it until that happens. for everyone else there's always hair dye.

edit: i don't usually gamble either but it is all that's open at night in coastal mississippi, unless you wanna go to waffle house or something. ;)

Have you all stopped contributing to your 401K's?

I reduced my 401k % to the min required to get the employer match. The monies are all used to buy equities/funds anyway so even if you "lose" on paper now you still hold on to the securities, most of which should appreciate in our lifetimes.

Really? I actually increased my contribution...figured that it's best to buy when the stocks are cheaper.

401k went from 40K to a little over 2K

Holy cow! How did that happen?

It's easy if you're one of the people who has your 401K account settings set to "aggressive". Your money is invested in risky stocks that, if they don't tank, could make you a lot of money. Back when I had a 401K many years ago, I had my portfolio set for "Safe". Less money-making potential, but much less chance of my money going away.

I didn't think is was possible to be *that* aggressive. Maybe if I put everything in the most risky bundle available to me, but I would never do that. I'm not much of a risk-taker in that way either.

I lost my job and my life savings. But go ahead and worry about your mutual funds and stocks.

Sorry to hear that, Larry. Hope that you can make it through these troubling times.

Some emerging markets are down more than 90%.

Luckily we don't really have a whole lot of money to lose! :P Then again we've not used credit for actually anything, apart from one small loan we don't work for the bank. We have the usual stocks and ####### that our jobs gave us when we started.. The wife has been there almost 3 years, I've been there 2 years and.. it isn't a whole lot of money. At the minute they are all now showing very unhealthy -% figures  Somehow in all this madness.. I managed to get a pay rise a promotion.. they let me keep my cubicle

All jokes aside I have notice as I'm sure many others have, people and coworkers that are going closer and closer to the edge. Those that are just about hanging in there... the noose of the banks tightening around their necks.

Yeah, you did what the conventional wisdom says you should. You are probably right. I decreased my contribution for a variety of reasons. Number 1, I want more cash on hand. With my 401k and mortgage prepay on top of a bunch of other major expenditures I've had to incur lately, my cash on hand was increasing at an anemic pace. So I decided to step it up a little. Number 2, I am a little skeered of what's coming.

... if you're one of the people who has your 401K account settings set to "aggressive".

Hubby came home today and said we'd lost about 60% to date. 60% of what I don't know, I'm too scared to ask.

Hopefully its just the $100 his grandma gave him for his birthday last year.

We put all my money from Canada in a CD for now. I'm no good with money and really need an education before I decide what to do with it.

I am feeling very tempted to go through the 'recover password' processes and check all my 401k's.

Thank god I'm lazy.

It will probably save you a mini stroke for now. I'd stick with lazy for a while longer.
