After reading this thread I actually asked about this today (I don't have retirement but I have other funds) and it was a bit depressing so I'll just continue to let someone else worry about it.

401k went from 40K to a little over 2K

Holy cow! How did that happen?

It's easy if you're one of the people who has your 401K account settings set to "aggressive". Your money is invested in risky stocks that, if they don't tank, could make you a lot of money. Back when I had a 401K many years ago, I had my portfolio set for "Safe". Less money-making potential, but much less chance of my money going away.
