$20,000 lost...............

Peace to All creatures great and small............................................

But when we turn to the Hebrew literature, we do not find such jokes about the donkey. Rather the animal is known for its strength and its loyalty to its master (Genesis 49:14; Numbers 22:30).

Actually I find that he's right a lot. I pulled my 401K too.

Just remember to reinvest when we hit the bottom. We still have a way to go...

the Dow is now at 8,200 and more bad news is likely to come before things get better.

Have you all stopped contributing to your 401K's? I'm wondering if I should. I seem to be losing about $100 a week, so I'm pretty much replacing what I'm losing.

All the so-called experts say to keep investing, that the markets will rebound in time.

Yup. It's called dollar-cost averaging. There are some bargins out there. Don't get scared and miss out on a company match.

I haven't lost anything because I'm looking at long term investing.

"The fact that we are here today to debate raising America’s debt limit is a sign of leadership failure. It is a sign that the U.S. Government can’t pay its own bills. It is a sign that we now depend on ongoing financial assistance from foreign countries to finance our Government’s reckless fiscal policies."

In this environment, you're more likely to lose money on the way down than on the way up.

Remember: markets always fall faster than they rise because fear (of loss) is a stronger

emotion than greed (the pleasure of gain). Also note that if the Dow falls 50%, it has to

go up 100% to go back to where it was before the fall.

Lost nothing yet and my job is secure. Only thing I will lose out on is the interest for my savings as they slashed the rates last week,

Would that weight loss worked the same way!

we are advised to let the investment stay in there because when we withdraw them that's the time that we are really going to lose.. :crying:

That's terrible advice.

It's just as easy to reinvest the money back into mutual funds as it is to withdraw it.

I pulled my 401(k) funds back in June after losing about 15-20%. If I hadn't done

that I would have lost another 30% by now.

Here's what I said back then:

I think the Dow and S&P500 are going to sink even lower... investors are selling

out of equity funds big time - especially U.S.-based equity funds.

...

Last week I finally decided to bite the bullet and move all the equity-based

funds in my IRAs and 401(k)s to safe money-market funds until further notice.

It was a nice rally (March-June), but unfortunately it now seems to be over.

don'tcha just hate it when mawilson is right?

He's right so often I gave up on trying to challenge what he says

Possibly. 7,000 is 50% of its peak which is consistent with previous bear markets.

However it can go much lower if something really bad happens (i.e. GM is allowed

to go bankrupt.)

The problem right now is the uncertainty that exists with regard to US companies'

future earnings. How can investors value a stock if they don’t have the foggiest

idea what the 'e' in p/e will be?

The bad news is, most companies have now reported their third-quarter results,

and they are worse than forecast for all sectors. Analysts were too optimistic

and didn't see it coming. They are much more pessimistic now - maybe too

pessimistic. We'll see.

Nothing so far - well, not in the US, not sure what's going on in the UK at the moment but I don't intend pulling anything out of that anyway, it's in for the long haul.

I am just about to start a 401k though. Wish me luck :)

Refusing to use the spellchick!

I have put you on ignore. No really, I have, but you are still ruining my enjoyment of this site. .

There are some bargins out there.

They are only bargains if the companies survive.

At $4 a share, Washington Mutual sure looked like a bargain - after all, the bank shares

were worth $45 a year earlier. What are they worth now? $0

At $2.80 a share, GM looks like a bargain today. But will GM still be around 2 years from now?
