Bush admin opens up land adjacent to national parks for drilling, National Park Service says they were not given enough opportunity to comment

The Bureau of Land Management has expanded its oil and gas lease program in eastern Utah to include tens of thousands of acres on or near the boundaries of three national parks, according to revised maps published this week.

National Park Service officials say that the decision to open lands close to Arches National Park and Dinosaur National Monument and within eyeshot of Canyonlands National Park was made without the kind of consultation that had previously been routine.

...

The new leases were added after a map of the proposed tracts was given to the National Park Service for comment this fall. The proximity of industrial activity concerns park managers, who worry about the impact on the air, water and wildlife within the park, as well as the potential for noise, said Michael D. Snyder, a regional director of the Park Service who is based in Denver.

The Park Service is usually given one to three months to comment on leases, Mr. Snyder added.

"This is the first time,” he said, “where we have not had sufficient opportunity to comment."

He said he had asked the Bureau of Land Management’s state director, Selma Sierra, to pull the new tracts from the December auction for more study. She refused.

How big is this buffer zone you now want around National parks?

They are drilling for Oil, not strip mining.

Ever drive out west? First thing you notice is all the oil pumps in peoples back yards. (sweet source of income I imagine).

Doesn't seem to be impacting their health very much.

I have never even heard of an ON LAND oil disaster.

Every dollars worth of Oil we take from our reserves is one less dollar in the hands of Iran.

Come on, this isn't about National parks... it's about doing everything possible to keep the price of oil high....to increase the incentive to get us all in Electric cars.

Am I right?

Bush has no regards to sustainability. And yet, they managed to call themselves conservatives. ROFL.

That IS a biggie isn't it?

Still waiting for people to wake TFU and see that drilling won't so jack to negatively impact the price of gas OR the national supply by more than a couple of drops per barrel. Might get stuck waiting a long time.

And then after 10 years we can continue to buy their oil once we notice we don't have enough to feed the current demand rate.

Wishing you ten-fold that which you wish upon all others.

Unfortunately, I don't have a Lazyboy.

But we are talking about this drilling going on OUT SIDE of the park lands?

Why don't you tell us how many acres are in that park so we will know if there is room to take a hike or not?

(I'm bettin the place is nothing but desert, anyway.)

Do you really think continuously drilling for a limited resource is going to have any long term accomplishment? All you're doing is voluntarily destroying environment for the sake of immediate profits. Try taking your head out of the oil industry's ### for a minute, since we have the same goal of ridding ourselves of ME/Venezuela oil. At the same time, we need to really consume less oil even from local standards. Oil is not in infinite supply so why aren't we thinking of alternative sources rather than simply push it on our grandchildren to take care of? Do you need a religious mindset about everything?

Man, you are too much, even when the subject is oil, your obsession w/ religion kicks in.

While you make a few valid points your argument would go a lot farther if you actually lived the message you preach.

Q: do you use anything with a combustion engine?

Q: Do you use AC?

PLease show me a few On-land oil incidents which ruined the Environment.

People don't like drilling but love oil. Time to cull the herd.

"The fact that we are here today to debate raising America’s debt limit is a sign of leadership failure. It is a sign that the U.S. Government can’t pay its own bills. It is a sign that we now depend on ongoing financial assistance from foreign countries to finance our Government’s reckless fiscal policies."

1. Not my fault I don't yet have a reasonable option of a BEV. Feel free to throw your angst toward GM.

2. I don't use AC.

And if you haven't figured it out, religious natured people are also called idealists. Separate from the notion of being practical and open-minded. You're merely parroting ####### you heard from the GOP and this much is clear.
