People have flocked to the melting pot we now know as America for the last 13,000 years. Since 2000, the U.S. has welcomed more than 10 million immigrants, who leave behind places like the Philippines, India, China, and Mexico. Our latest video, "Coming to America," explores the history, politics, and challenges of taking in the world's "huddled masses."

Where are the coming up with these high numbers, mean like well over a million per year? Referring to legal immigration where people come here to become lawful permanent residents and eventually become US citizens, if they prefer to do that.

To the best of my knowledge, only two ways to come here, either by the lottery that is limited to 50,000 per year, or by marriage that is limitless. According to what the USCIS publishes, and assumes by marriage where all receive a conditional permanent resident card that has to be converted to a unconditional status via the I-751, the USCIS has published that they are processing about 140,000 I-751 applications per year, and in the last four years, this number has declined.

That adds up to less than 200,000 immigrants per year, not even close to that well over a million number per year.

Only other way to come here legally is either through a work or student visa, work visas are limited to around 60,000 per year, student visas have no quota that I am aware of. But these are temporary visas, not permanent ones, and these people are suppose to go back home when their visas expired. Can't call this immigration.

With estimates on illegal immigrants, numbers as low as every one person here out of fifteen are here illegally, seems kind of outrageous.

Emilio, the now defunct Cuba refugee that headed the USCIS until last April reported to congress that with the fee increase for USC, they received over 3 million applicants, but this number was eventually corrected to about 600,000, quite an inaccuracy, try to be a buck off on your income tax returns and see what happens. Based on that number of under 200,000 lawful permanent residents per year, USC applications would be far less, many do not want to apply because of the English requirement, but 400,000 thousand extra applicants sounds reasonable due to the rate increase, certainly not over 3 million!

Do we have government officials that missed class that day went kids were taught how to count? Beginning to think so, or maybe they were watching too much of Carl Sagan with those billions and billions.

If you watch to the end of the video they cite a 2006 report for their numbers.

I'm sure the numbers could be updated now that it's 2008, but it was a creative, fun, and interesting way to present them don't you think?
