We use magicjack. This is how it works...

You would buy it online for $25.00. You pay $20.00 for 1 year of service. They send it to you and you go online to set it up.

It is a little box that plugs into your USB port on your computer (like the webcam). The little box has a phone jack on the end of it, and you plug your phone into that.

It is assigned with a phone number from the USA. You would pick one in the area of your loved ones, so that it is a local number for them.

Whoever has the jack, can call any US number(land line and cell). The $20.00 a year buys you unlimited calling. If the Magicjack is in another country, you just dial the US number like you would here.

Also, if you have the jack plugged into your computer and you have the internet on, anyone in the US can call the number for the magicjack like they are calling any Us number. It would be a local number for your family to call you if you set it up with a number from their area.

I use it with my husband, he has it there in Egypt. We had trouble getting it delivered in the mail, customs decided they needed a little pay off not to cause any trouble, but it works very well and I would recommend it to anyone. Very good quality.

When my husband comes home, he will leave it in Egypt so his family can call us for free and we can call them for free too.

I found a less expensive way to call-- I pay 12 cents per minute. rebtel.com-tell them I sent you! LOL Really tho, I added the local number rebtel gave me to my circle, and so the call only costs me the 11 or 12 cent/ minute international connection!!! It has saved me a bundle! I would be interested in the whole jack thing, but my hubby doesn't have a computer that is connected to the internet, and so it wouldn't do much good unless I expect him to run to the netcafe every time I wanna talk to him on the phone! Its easier with rebtel. We then limit our calls to about 1/2 hr and it works out just fine--best of all-- they take paypal!YAY!

Adam uses Rebtel too. They charge $10.30 for I forgot how many minutes. I want to find out about what Linda was saying about sending a phone service to them. We need something CHEAP! Phone bills are too expensive these days

Just adding my 10cents-lol- sorry couldn't help myself! I am not sure what you'd have to payoff the customs to Jordan!?! They make interesting decisions on how much they want for a care package to my husband and family there!?!?!?!?! Sometimes!!! In any case- good luck!

with T-mobile you can add for $4.99 a month a country and for me calling Spain on a land line is only 7 cents a min.!!!! not many hear about that one do they. hehe

But I have one question ... how can she use it if she doesn't have a PC? And does it have to be plugged into the PC at all times in order for it to ring (when someone calls me?) Sorry if I am repeating myself but I really want to be sure we can use this thing before I go out and have my old mum go out anf try get this thing. Thanks everyone!

She doesn't need a pc. You can purchase it and set it up with a phone number that is local to ur moms area. then you hook it up to UR pc and she can call you on a local number for free and you can call her using the magicjack that is hooked to ur pc for free. the fee is just 20 dollars a year and it is unlimited use. Your mom doesn't even need to have it at her house. she will just dial the phone number that is associated with the jack that is on ur computer. does that make sense?
