No, the TV is not the only source for the rest of the world but..true Americans (sorry, I'm gonna sound sterotypical) like to watch Tv...a lot...and how many really read the newspaper anymore, you can just go online and read it for free. It's not that the sources aren't available its just that they are not really raised to show interest in them and that is partly because of the TV. Now, newer generations have other sources like the net and maybe they'll show more interest but I highly doubt that. It's not the American way...

Reading a paper online still gives a person the ability to find out about foreign affairs. The problem is not lack of resources, I would argue, but unfortunately one of not caring.

The average wage in Aus is about $55K and they are also guaranteed 4 weeks annual leave. Unemployment rate is at 3.9%.

From the Financial Times:

The global financial crisis has smashed a A$40bn ($27.7bn, £17bn, €21.4bn) hole in the

Australian government’s finances the country’s treasurer said on Wednesday, warning of

weaker economic growth and rising unemployment.

... Australia’s gross domestic product will drop to 1.5 per cent this fiscal year, with

unemployment rising to 5.5 per cent, half a percentage point higher than the government’s

latest estimate.

It is not immune to the world financial mess but is in a better position to get through it. As is Canada.

Australia and Canada are the only two English speaking countries where the government has a budget surplus. Last month Australia even had a trade surplus compared with the US's $550 billion trade deficit.

Ha, I'm so sorry , I just realized you wrote AUS, Not US!!! Sorry, and nerver mind. I was wondering what company you were working for over here!!!

 People here are lucky if they get two weeks.

According to the Internal Revenue Service, the 400 richest American households earned a total of $US138 billion, up from $US105 billion a year earlier. That's an average of $US345 million each, on which they paid a tax rate of just 16.6 per cent.

I was just wondering if those of you that come here from all over, what do you think about Americans as far as how we are informed? Do you think most Americans are clueless to the truth of our own politics, and the world politics? Do you think we are not as aware here of the world outside our own? Do you think that in other countries people are more aware of politics, issues in other places?

To me as an American who has many friends from different countries I see things I never knew before and have become aware of many things in our own politics and policies and so on that I never even considered. I was wondering in other countries do you feel people are more informed ? Are we the only ones with our head in the sand?

If your are asking will anyone lead you by the hand and keep you informed, the answer would be a big fat no. Typically when someone comes to your door, it's because you are doing something wrong, like leaving your trash can out, or you get something in the mail, phone calls are rare. With the USCIS, you have to pester them to get any action done. Don't have to worry about the draft anymore, least for now. But if you are under the age of 18, better make darn sure you are attending school, that can get nasty if you don't in most areas.

We certainly have our distractions here, what is Britney doing, sports, video games, buying a new house, filling up that house, vehicles, boys toys, womens clothes, dental appointments, school and church meetings and very little attention is paid to the government. Until it's generally too late, like you no longer have a job and can't find another, the price of gas skyrockets as do your home energy bills, then you wake up and take an interest as to what is going on. Worse is when we are at war and your loved ones are put in harms way, then you really pay attention.

No, it's just a jealousy thing. Aussies are secretly jealous of the Brits whilst simultaneously thinking that the Brits are jealous of them.

I live here and I will soon be a citizen but I cant help but get angry when I hear Americans talk about how wonderful their country is and how the World is just waiting to move to their country.

Tell me they are joking.

Can somebody tell me of one city in America which is a ) not a ####### whole B ) envied by those overseas. I am sure people will take this as crapping on America but it is not the case. It is a mater of like it or not in terms of infrastructure the rest of the world has propelled ahead and easily surpasses the US. Public transportation is an absolute joke and roads are almost third world grade. How many streets have no street lighting, sidewalks, full of pot holes, no proper marking or reflectors and have not been paved in about 30 years. The country still uses 110V ffs.

Hmmm no wonder, there is a couple of members that have argued with Aficionado, including myself, but he really goes at it with British members and viceversa.

I wouldn't say that consider how many Britts are migrating to Australia permanently. Single australians travel to the UK for work and then return home once they are sick of the god awful weather, bad food, small living spaces, everything shutting down at 7pm and how expensive it is to live there. Whereas Brits tend to immigrate permanently to Australia. 5.5 million born Brits now live abroad with the greatest number in Australia 1,300,000.

The only people who don't really migrate to Australia are Americans. For obvious reasons stated earlier.

I visited Australia and liked it. When you say Australians travel to the UK for work, you really mean London, right? London is expensive and the living areas are cramped together, agreed. The bad weather is largely a myth that has stuck - you know we don't get pea-soupers anymore, yeah? Bad food - sure, we've got that, plus world-class restuarants too. Shutting down at 7pm? Come on.

Brits are leaving and many do end up in Aus, but much of that is familial. If my parents wanted to retire to another country, do you think they would go to Aus or to the US to be nearer my family here?
