obama to lift stem cell funding ban?

Since 1994, Congress has prohibited federal financing for embryo experiments. Scientists have long complained that such funding is needed to fully explore the potential benefits of embryonic stem cells, which divide to become all the cells needed in the human body and which may offer treatments for Alzheimer's and other diseases.

Barack Obama's transition chief, John Podesta, said Sunday that the president-elect is reviewing President George W. Bush's executive orders. Bush has long held that any research that destroys embryos is immoral. "There's a lot that the president can do using his executive authority without waiting for congressional action, and I think we'll see the president do that," Podesta said. "I think that he feels like he has a real mandate for change."

The federal funding limit is supported by opponents of abortion rights. Obama has supported the research. Many moderate Republicans also support the research, giving it the stamp of bipartisanship, according to AP.

Research in recent years, meanwhile, has raised optimism that similar research could be done using skin cells, cells from amniotic fluid or cells from dead embryos. In 2007, Bush vetoed a bill that would have eased federal constraints on funding embryonic stem cell research, while simultaneously issuing an executive order directing the Health and Human Services Department to promote research into the other types of cells that hold the potential.

But others argue that reliance on these other methods, which have known limitations, could stifle true embryonic stem cell research and lead to dead ends.

About freaking time! Other forms of stem cells have partially differentiated and therefore don't hold the same regenerative capabilities. The whole argument against it makes no sense either. We have SO many embryos formed for in vitro that are never used and discarded. So it's better to flush a couple of cells that could become a human than using them for research and eventually to live on in a human? Creating an embryo for research purposes I can see an ethical dilema, but not using ones that aren't viable and will be discarded.

I have a freezer full of stem cells ready for Ebay.

"The fact that we are here today to debate raising America’s debt limit is a sign of leadership failure. It is a sign that the U.S. Government can’t pay its own bills. It is a sign that we now depend on ongoing financial assistance from foreign countries to finance our Government’s reckless fiscal policies."

Ugh, w/e. They are wrong, recent scientific research shows that adult stem cells lack the plasticity of embryonic. I don't care what random youtube things says (not that you believe it, but you know what I mean) but in dealing with these embryos we have 2 options. 1) they sit in a freezer or are destroyed ending any possible life that could have come from that embryo. 2) Use the stem cells in another human being where both the cells grow and AREN'T destroyed AND the recipient continues on living hopefully what is a more healthful life. Besides, most embryos that are created aren't viable and won't implant. What the heck can anyone find wrong about using those? UGH, people need to stop getting in their own way! They need to find a real problem to worry about.

You're hoping the embryos will be kosher???

Dude, we're not talking about eating them!

Are we?

Mmm stem cells, num num num

Well first of all here are three main sources for obtaining stem cells - adult cells, cord cells, and embryonic cells. Secondly I haven't done research on what Obama might do so its important to know that. Finally even if he's considering using embryonic cells there are various circumstances that might be involved so its important to know that as well.

Basically more information is needed here to form an intelligent opinion... or VJers could do the usual thing and speak from their butt.

All I know is there are people, including myself that has a child with an incurable genetic disease with the only hope that stem cell research may be the answer. And if we as Americans don't do it, other countries will and get the patents on it. And hold us hostage for the cures. Wish that GWB had such a child, mabe then he wouldn't be a pius a$$hole. What, our researchers are killing people in this act? GWB sure is, with his lies.

I know huh. It explains why you're not the President of the Harvard Law Review, and never attended Harvard.
