Police record translation

I have all of my police records...one of them is in German cause I lived in Bonn when I was 19. Does anyone know if it needs to be "Officially" translated or can I simply translate it myself? I speak German so it would be easy to do... finding a translating company in Ottawa might be a little more difficult!

Translations are suppose to be done by a Professional that will certify, or stamp the translations and sign them stating they are accurate.

So, I don't think you will be able to do it yourself.

No, the translations do not have to be done by a 'professional' or 'certified' translator. Translations can be done by anyone who is literate in the two languages and is willing to certify that they have done an accurate translation.

Many people have done their own translations, although I prefer to find a 3rd party friend to do mine.

there is an example document here that you can attach to the form that states that the person who did the tranlating swears that they are profficient in both languages and that it is correct. a 3rd party looks better, especially if it is a police record....

In my instructions in Packet 3 from Vancouver consulate, it was specified that all translations have to be stamped by certified translator. And I lived in 2 other contries than Canada, so had to find and pay the translators.

Can you quote the words used in the instruction? And does the instruction give any indication as to what entity or entities are accepted to provide the certification to the translator? (What entity certified the translators you found and paid?)

I'm not saying that you are wrong, but I will say that many people incorrectly read the words 'the translation must be certified by the translator' to mean 'the translation must be done by a certified translator'.

What is a Sworn Public Translator in Brazil? Is there some government agency - federal, provincial, or perhaps local - that tests people for the position and bestows the title?

Sworn Translator exames go by state and you can go into the comercial board of each state to get a list of sworn translators and contact information for that state.

I will post exact words from my Packet 3 once I get home, I am at work now, but I am sure all translated documents have to be with a stamp from certified translator. And in Canada also, to be a certified translator one has to pass the exam and pay annual fees to continue to provide this service. And in Calgary where I live, there was only one certified translator for languages I needed. So, it was a lot of hassle to have this done, but I did it and they had no complaints at the interview.

So it sounds that Canada is similar to what Laura reports for Brazil - there is such a thing as a government-certified translator, and the US consulate requires that such a translator be used.

É só ir aí no site da Junta Comercial do Paraná e clicar em tradudores juramentados que vai aparecer uma lista. No google vc tb deve achar empresas que fazem tradução juramentada.
