Social Security Number

Hello everyone,

I have been in the US for almost two weeks now. I know I am expecting my Green Card to arrive by mail. But I have seen some people go to the social security office to get a SSN.

I also know that my visa is now a temporary I-551 ( Green card ).

Question is, will I get a social security number/card in the mail too? or is that a different process?

Note that I answered the following in my DS-230

33a. Have you ever applied for a Social Security Number (SSN)?

No

Do you want the Social Security Administration to assign you an SSN (and

issue a card) or issue you a new card (if you have an SSN)? You must

answer "Yes" to this question and to the "Consent To Disclosure" in order

to receive an SSN and/or card.

Yep, I got my SSN in the mail three weeks after arrival- still waiting for the physical green card, but I am told that can now take 90+ days.

Yes, a SSN will be assigned to you and your card mailed to you once it is ready. If you want to speed up the process a little pop by your local SSA with your passport and they can look you up in the system and if you have already been assigned a number they can give it to you on the spot. You will still have to wait for the card to be mailed to you

good question cause on the consulate website my husband is going to has a form he would need to fill out so they can work on his SSN.. does he not have to do the form or does he???

as far as I am aware the only form that is needed is the DS-230

Well, another answer is MAYBE. We never received ours even though we had said YES in the DS-230, so we had to go in person to the SSA office to get my husband's SS#. If it's been more than 7-8 weeks and you still have not received anything in the mail, go to your nearest SSA office and file for one. Some times Immigration doesn't let them know that you had requested a SS# on your DS-230.

Very good question. I entered USA on Nov 19th, and got a bit confused by the officer who took the envelope and did my fingerprints. First, he told me that the passport thing will be valid for a year and that I should expect the green card to arrive in 6-9 months. Then I asked him about the SSN, and then he replied that I should get it at the same time when I get the green card!

I guess, the usual procedure is that you wait for 3 weeks and then visit the local office and check there what is going on.
