The problem is that the 'emotional' side of the GOP have the loudest voices. Things like abortion and homosexual relationships take on a prominance that defies belief and the real political meat, the economy, foreign policy and the like which is the provenenance of the intellectual right is drowned under their clamouring voices.

I think you hit the nail on the head. As the GOP is regrouping and trying to figure out what to do next, that seems to be the sentiment that I've been reading ....that McCain was just the wrong candidate.

A recent poll says 64 percent of Republicans want Sarah Palin to run in 2012.

Are they out of their friggin mind? That woman epitomizes everything that is wrong with

the GOP today and the reason the party is in the shitter.

Well they did respond the most favourably to her - from their perspective she was probably the only *genuine* conservative on the ticket.

Still after everything that happened with the TV interviews, the allegations by campaign staffers about her lack of knowledge (and apparently terrible temper) you'd think she'd be dead on her feet for a 2012 run. At the very least - she'll have a lot of work to do to *prove* herself... An uphill battle indeed...

As predicted, the fight is on as to which direction the GOP will go next. The intellectual right or the low right. A great show on NPR about this called The 'Flexible Agression' of the McCain Campaign.

It will be interesting to see where they go from here. I'm still a bit mystified what's going on with the UK Tories who have never really been the same since the end of the Thatcher era.

The problem is that the Republican Party doesn't seem to have moved on any since the Reagan era (part of why McCain lost I think) - they're still using 80's rhetoric to appeal to a 21st century audience.

That and Obama for all his faults has altered the demographics of the political landscape. I guess the test will be if the Reps are able to appeal successfully to younger voters and how they can realise this without alienating their traditional base of support.

It can be done. Someone like Jindal can do it.

The UK tories lost the middle ground and essentially the UK populations want a centrist agenda. They aren't comfortable with either extreme. I don't quite know how they can regain it either, although 'boredom' with having the same faces in power may well be labour's undoing in the end.

Well I tend to think that they won't be going in for one of the old establishment figures - it'll be someone *fresh*. Probably why Palin is looking favourable at the moment - though I doubt she'll even be in the top 10 in 4 years time.

I disagree - it can't be done. Younger voters support gay rights and abortion and don't care about religion.

Sheesh, if she's even in the news in four years I'll be surprised. She really would have to have a complete personality transformation and somehow gain an intellectual perspective that she so obviously lacks. I just don't see that happening.

The chattering heads on MSNBC are floating Gingrich for 2012

I see a Jindal/Crist or Crist/Jindal ticket as being nearly unbeatable.

The GOP does not need most younger voters to win, they just need to eat into the D margin.

That was really interesting to watch - though I'm out of touch with what's going on with the Tories right now. Last I saw David Cameron was trying to turn "New Tory" into the new green party.

I understand Gordon Brown isn't terribly popular at the moment - but I guess he'll get in unless there isn't a credible opposition.

Still I can't see how Cameron could be worse that William Hague or Iain Duncan Smith - those guys were very odd.

Do you remember the rist of William Hague? He spoke at a conservative conference when he was barely out of college and was hyped to be something big. In the end, he was just a damp squib.

Brown has an edge now the economy is in focus. I think people understand that despite everything, having someone in charge who has fiscal responsibility and a comprehensive understanding of how the economy works is absolutely crucial. Unless the Tories have someone credible on that score in the wings, I think they have to be sunk - that or the economy improves to the point where the electorate aren't focusing on it.

She's a pariah for the GOP...

The 2 statements above are at odds with each other.

Not really. A lot of Republicans are angry with the current Party's leadership and there aren't any real personalities who can fill that void. If they continue to think she's the future of the Party, they're in for a rude awakening, IMO.

Its probably because they're looking for a younger, fresher political figure and right now Palin fits that ticket.

Of course I could be wrong and we might see John McCain standing again - 4 years closer to the grave but still enthusiastic... ;)

So you're saying she'll become a pariah but isn't right now.
