Why shouldn't there be a demand made for the highest standards of care from a surrogate parent?

Well I'd say because there are too many kids in need of placement. I don't know enough about the need. Here in the U.S., there must be a shortage of foster parents, no? Where do all of the "extra" kids go?

Did you notice any health related problems because of this? My family smoked around me my whole childhood and my mother smoked while pregnant with me. I was an above average birth weight and I have been perfectly healthy my whole life (thank God). My brother weighed more than me and he hasn't had any smoking related problems either.

My mom smoked while she was pregnant with me... And her doctor told her drinking wine was okay, too!!:blink: It was a grand old time... the 70's...

So far, thank God, there hasn't been much wrong with me, aside from being completely nuts sometimes, and the mood swings... but that couldn't be from smoking, could it?

Ine has to assume that they have in fact thought of this. My instinct is that the kind of people who are most likely to adopt/foster are the kind of people who would willingly stop smoking if that became a requirement. Most carers quite simply care.

Refusing to use the spellchick!

I have put you on ignore. No really, I have, but you are still ruining my enjoyment of this site. .

You may want to be checked for that. I hear this can be signs of femininity.

Yes, i think there is a shortage, especially for older kids... and

the extras have to live in group homes, like in dormitories...

in all seriousness, i think it must be pretty terrible...

I just think that the need for foster homes is rather large and this eliminates even more potential places for these kids to live. You can't act like we have a surplus of places for these kids to go. First priority is to make sure the home is safe and there is no abuse in my opinion. After that if you still have extra homes then you can go after things like smoking. I will allow some rules about foster parents should be in place, but not to the point they can't smoke at all.

Here is an example of the shortage in a news article:

http://www.statesman.com/news/content/regi...07/7foster.html

The Goberts, who have two teenage foster children, know that there aren't nearly enough foster parents in Texas. In fact, it's gotten to the point that some of the children the state has removed from their homes because of abuse or neglect are sleeping in state offices and sometimes hotels because there is nowhere else for them to go.

A complete load of bullsh1t. Let's allow heroin addicts and drunks to foster and adopt. After all, there is no second hand fix. Bull-effing-#######. Also first place to adopt for religious fundamentalists, yeah!

I smoke. Fvcking deal with it.

Seriously. People get bent outta shape about smoking yet do not respond to the "let's allow heroin addicts" to foster -- or people who feed the kiddies chiz whiz and goldfish crackers with water, or change bedding sheets every 3 weeks, or let them play video games 5 hours a day. Freaking hypocrisy. If smoking is the measure of good parenthood, I feel sorry for those who think that way. Raising a kid is about more relevant things than that. But some people are just too small minded I guess.

Off I go to have a cancerous cigarette while reading a nice biography. OMFG! Smokers read? Non-fiction? WOW. I thought they were just serial murderers.

Hypocrisy has the ability to come bite you in the @ss. Hold your judgment in the mirror and ask yourselves what kind of foster parents a child needs. Seriously. Get off your high horse.

Amen.

Second hand smoke has demonstrably and significantly worse health effects than cheese whiz. You know that.

As for heroin, I don't know about other states but in NJ they won't let you adopt if you have any drug convictions in the last few years and have not been through a rehab program.

Man is made by his belief. As he believes, so he is.

You know what I am talking about brother. I would not personally smoke as soon as I got pregnant. But to say smoking disqualifies people from parenthood is a load of bullsh1t. there ARE more important things -- say nutrition, education, an active lifestyle, cultural education, hell, even spiritual guidance. A safe environment. Love, anyone?

Perhaps we could screen out also those MoFos who belong to fundamentalist racially motivated groups, those who are homophobic, those who cannot read or write, those who..... come on.
