After visiting my wife in C.R. I returned to the U.S. and she went to Colombia for a little over a month. Wile she's there we figure she can get her police clearence and birth certificate. In Colombia, what exactly (in spanish) is the police report or clearence called that she will need so I could tell her exactly what to get? Would it need to be translated, or is the original spanish version excepted since we are going through the process in Costa Rica? How long would it be good for and would it be easy for her to get another if she wasn't in Colombia?

Also her birth certificates. She has copies (seem to be all they issue), however they are stamped to make them official. They look like photocopies taken out of a notebook page (you can see the rings). But they are several years old. Is there a time limit on them too or should she get new copies made.

Thanks.

Correct me if I'm wrong but either of these would not be needed until the interview, right.

Thanks again

That's correct, she won't need them until the day of her interview. I'm pretty sure the US embassy will accept her birth certificates even if they're a few years old, but it's always a good idea to have new copies.

Also to clarify, the copies of the birth certificates the notaries give you are CERTIFIED COPIES, they keep the original. The stamp on the photocopy clearly states that it is a copy of the original. The US embassy accepts originals or certified copies. Since they speak Spanish in Costa Rica, she doesn't have to have them translated for her interview. However, she will need to have them translated for you to send copies for her AOS.

The Police certificate in Colombia is called the Certificado Judicial and she can go to the DAS office to get it.

A birth certificate does not expire unless someone is born again.

YMMV

Exactly, that's the way it should be but many people in Colombia don't accept any kind of certificate unless is less than 6 months old. So you constantly have to go to your notary to get a new copy, it's really annoying.

Which reminds me... I believe the Police Certificate from Colombia is valid for 1 year.
