MOSCOW, November 9 (RIA Novosti) - Twenty people died on board a Russian nuclear submarine in the Pacific Ocean and 21 others were taken to the hospital, the Navy said on Sunday.

The accident occurred late on Saturday during the sea trials of a nuclear-powered submarine as a result of the unsanctioned activation of the submarine's fire-extinguishing system. The incident is the worst for the Russian Navy since the sinking of the Kursk submarine in 2000 when all 118 sailors died.

Russia's Investigative Committee earlier said the nuclear submarine incident killed 20, including three sailors and 17 shipyard workers, while 22 people were injured. Investigators said that the death occurred as a result of Freon gas entering the lungs.

Yup. Suffocated. As an ex-navy nuke I can just be thankful I wasn't in the Russian Navy.

I wouldn't trust Nukes with Russia Russia with Nukes, period. Their safety policy is very weak. An example was the chernobyl disaster.
Not sure you were awake when you typed, so supplied presumed correction.

Fly-in-ointment: unfortunately, Russia developped its nuke programme without US authorisation (some designs/blueprints stolen in 1940's/1950's by networks of pro-communist spies such as Julius Rosenberg), so the question of trusting Russia with nukes never arose.

Yeah the story wrongly says freon. Which would be a terrible fire fighting agent. Freon + heat = phosgene gas.... which is poisonous.

Are you sure that the story is wrong about freon vs halon being used?

Wiki entry on the incident as well as BBC also say freon.

And given Soviet/Russian propensity for "shortcuts", ...
