Based on what you share of this situation, it is not an offense that will put you in jail. What was the problem with your driving, that caused the officer to pull you over? If you were drinking, then prepare for a day in jail, at least, in most states.

You weren't arrested? That's a surprise.

I guess Illinois law is much looser than NY. In NY, you would have been arrested and charged with evading police (class B felony) which punishable by up to 3 years in prison. Also, a permanent resident can be deported for a felony conviction, so you not having permanent residency I believe that yould have been deported after serving your prison sentance. If you only received a ticket, it's not as bad. If you can just pay a fine, do it. If you can avoid going in front of a judge, that would be your best choice. If you have to go to a court hearing, you will want to get a good lawyer. You should also speak to an immigration lawyer, and may want to bring him as well.

Is there a reason why you didn't stop for the police? :bonk:

Often on the back of the ticket issued you will find instructions in regard to your particular citation - it may be you just have to pay a fine, or you may have to stand in court. If court is not mandatory, you can still choose to go to court to fight it, but that doesn't sound like something you'd probably want to do.

As far as your GC goes - a traffic citation (other than maybe a dui) should not have an adverse effect.

Next time - it's wise to stop for the red-n-blue lights in your mirror...

going to traffic court in IL is a waste of time...

everyone is guilty as charged.

IMHO the best is to just pay the fine by mail and behave for the next couple of years.

or pay and go to school if you have the option and then behave..

and yes, IL traffic law is very reasonable comparing to some other states...

In the future, I would suggest not making cops chase you, as it tends to make them cranky. Cranky cops give you tickets, arrest you, or maybe Taze you, if he's feeling especially cranky.

In other words, stop for the cops. If you don't, you deserve what you get. It IS illegal to refuse to stop, after all....

Lady, people aren't chocolates. Do you know what they are mostly? Bastards. ####### coated bastards with ####### filling. But I don't find them half as annoying as I find naive bobble-headed optimists who walk around vomiting sunshine.

You did the right thing.

The police won't respect you unless you make them chase you.

OK, I'm just kidding.

What were you thinking? It sounds like you got all the way home

before noticing there was a police car with flashing lights behind you?

You're supposed to pull to the side for emergency vehicles, even if they're

not trying to stop you in particular. You created a very dangerous situation.

That said, in Illinois (as with the rest of the country) you are innocent until proven guilty.

Whereas another Illinois VJer has very little faith in the court system, I have much faith

in it.

You just need to find a lawyer that is familiar with the judge and the court. That means,

get somebody that's in THEIR system. Once you have a court date, go to the courthouse

a week ahead. Go to the same room you're assigned. Watch the proceedings, and then

find a lawyer that you feel is successful. If you try to represent yourself, or get a lawyer

that's not in THEIR system, you will have less a chance of getting off.

The attorney's fees could cost as much, if not more than the ticket, but it's worth it

to preserve your driving privileges, and to keep your insurance low.

My family and I drive on Illinois highways, and would appreciate it if you would be more alert

in the future.

hmmmmm..

have you ever been to traffic court in Chicago?

if don't, I do recommend going there to see..

ahh... wait, you cannot get in there if you do not have a ticket..

my opinion has nothing to do with trust... just observation...

I have to admit - sub's court are slightly more "user" friendly

why spend money for a lawyer just to pay fine?

the 42 cents stamp pays it all for mailing..

why bother going to court at all if there is another option

trip to court = several hours

trip to post box = several minutes

and yes, after all pay attention when driving
