First off, avoid any company that claims to 'repair' your credit. They're all scams. Secondly, there's nothing you can do until you get the bill cleared up. Do you have the phone bills from that time to see where all those charges are coming from? Since it sounds like this wasn't a case of mistaken identity, then you can't really contest the entry on his credit reports. At this point your only recourse is to pay the bill to get it to show as a paid collection. Still a big ding on his report but not as bad as an unpaid collection.

Here's a legitimate guide for repairing credit.

You could try to settle the charge. You may be able to get them to accept .50 on the dollar, but make sure and get everything in writing before you pay them.

I know a good way.;..pay you bill with Verizon.

He received an itemized statement...he should know why he was charged 2 grand.

I finally got rid of the never ending money drain. I called the plumber, and got the problem fixed. I wish her the best.

Fixing requires repayment. If the collection agency offers a settlement to clear your history, then accept it.

Everyone's advice is good. Follow them. Soon, your husband will be okay.

It sounds like your husband ignored the bill, ignored dealing with it and now that it is an issue.... ooops! If the charges really were not his, they would have listened if he had followed up on the matter. This doesn't seem like a time to be p'd off at Verizon, but instead p'd off at your husband for ignoring the issue (sorry, but unless there is more to your story, this is the read on the story).

Someone needs to start talking to the collection service. They will take less than the original amount billed, however the tricky part is getting the credit report to reflect pay off. This won't happen over night so be prepared for a journey other than a visa journey. Like someone else said, be sure to get the renegotiated settlement in writing, do not pay anything based on a verbal promise over the phone. There might be 2 dings against the credit report, 1 from the collection agency and another from Verizon so be sure the renegotiated settlement covers both dings.

Life..... Nobody gets out alive.
