2009: Conditional GC Expired and Husband has been having affairs since 2008 in China. Can't file for ROC since he got laid off. He came to Jakarta to live with me and my parents. He got a new job. Life resume to normal or so I thought.
March 2010: Officially separated after yet more affairs exposed just a day after my birthday!

February 2011: Officially divorced.
June 18, 2011: He married the girl he had the last affair with.

August 2014: I am engaged with my real soulmate. Not an American.

Yeah it's been quite a haul. When we got married neither of us had any clue about the immigration process. Boy was that a rude awakening!

See we sort of eloped :blush: He was here visiting after we got engaged and we were talking about the logistics of gathering both sides of our family together for a wedding. His family is in Canada and most of mine are in Florida so it would be a major issue. As we talked about that we started talking about requirements for a marriage license, and last I knew, here in Illinois it required a blood test and a 30 day wait. Well we were out driving around and stopped into the court house to ask, and found out there was no wait. Although at that moment we still had no intention of eloping we decided to get one. It might sound wierd but ..sort of a tangible symbol of our commitment and love.

As they handed us the license the girl asked us when we were getting married and embarrassed we said..donno don't have anything set up yet, and she told us the judge was marrying at the court house the next day. Well needless to say like two giggly happy love struck kids there we were at the court house the next day!

After we got home and called our families to let them know what we had done, we decided we should find out what papers would need to be filed, I knew there had to be at least something had to be done to notify the government but didn't know what......OUCH!

I was on long term disability from my job at that time. I had developed a life threatening sensitivity to certain chemical fumes, and was an analytical lab technician by profession. Disability benefits (company provided) were not sufficent for the proof of support, nor were they forever. The company would not take me back until the benefit period ran out without a full release and I could never obtain that. When those benefits did run out, although they now would take me back, they had nothing to offer me. After 22 years I not only had to find a new company to work for, I had to find a new career and it took me until 2005 to finally get myself back on track enough to meet the proof of support requirements, and we finally filed our petition.

It's kind of ironic, the proof of support requirement, meant to ensure the immigrant does not tax our welfare system, actually made it harder for me to get back on my feet and stay off the system. It would have been so much easier if I had someone I could trust to be there for my daughter. At one point my only option was to apply for FMLA and work less than 40 hours a week because my employer assigned me to an afternoon shift that would have left her completely on her own from the time she got home from school until over an hour after she needed to be in bed at night 5 days a week.

He's planning about a week, he's hoping to sell his car and some old computers before he comes home. Kind of tying up some loose ends and also bringing in a few extra bucks to help me out considering all I've been dealing with here at home :)

Oh just knowing he's been approved and picking up the visa today is such a relief, a week is nothing to wait for him to get here I'm so happy...and tired and fried and happy :)
