Hello! My sister recently married a guy from Morocco and she feels he may have used her to migrate to the USA. Are there any signs she can look for to know if he is using her or not? They have been married 3 months and she will start the paprwork this coming Monday with their lawyer but she wants to confirm everything is legitamate and he is not using her. I am married to a man from another country too and I am starting to wonder if he loves me or used me too now since it is fairly common these days. Any red flags to look for?

Well, there's a shocker.

Best advice: if you have doubts, don't get married.

PEOPLE: READ THE APPLICATION FORM INSTRUCTIONS!!!! They have a lot of good information in them! Most of the questions I see on VJ are clearly addressed by the form instructions. Give them a read!! If you are unable to understand the form instructions, I highly recommend hiring someone who does to help you with the process. Our process, from K-1 to Citizenship and U.S. Passport is completed. Good luck with your process.

Ask him, "Who is this chick who keeps calling and asking for you?" and see if he calls your bluff.

Tell him that you guys are going to be married in Guantanamo Bay and see what it says.

This is a recipe for disaster... you're both already married, now the doubt?

If you think you or your cousin/sister are being used..use your head and gut. The answer will come.

Only listen to what YOUR gut tells you. Don't search Vj for horror stories.

ask why you/she "feels used"

Timeline: 13 month long journey from filing to visa in hand

If you were lucky and got an approval and reunion with your loved one rather quickly; Please refrain from telling people who waited 6+ months just to get out of a service center to "chill out" or to "stop whining" It's insensitive, and unecessary. Once you walk a mile in their shoes you will understand and be heard.

Thanks!

In all seriousness, these situations are highly individual, and no one can analyze your relationship or concerns from afar. I think there's something to following your gut, tho. My previous post was sarcastic (for that I apologize), but a common thread in many of the USC-as-green-card-vehicle stories is an obvious infidelity.

You may want to check out this section of the site if you haven't already:

Effects of Major Family Changes on Immigration Benefits.

It's not very uplifting reading, but there are many stories about USCs being used for US residency.
