I just wanted to share this - after 8 years of accident free driving in the UK I just took the 15 minute (15 minutes, wth??) driving test in CA, got no minors but failed apparently because I stopped when a green arrow turned red on a right hand turn and did not pull into oncoming traffic (the arrow was red as I approached the line) , this is a critical error for 'failing to obey a traffic signal'.

I was too shocked to argue back, but I always thought it was more of a critical error to pull your car into the path of an oncoming truck...that said, seeing how some people drive round here maybe I've had the wrong info all these years.

Oh well, back to the DMV for me...how I love dealing with US government agencies!

Please don't tell me I'm the only Brit to fail this test...how embarassing!

Happy weekend all,

L

Don't worry too much about it! I think the examiner is a retard, to be honest.

The same thing almost happened to me, I almost failed my exam because I stopped too long at a 4 way stops. It is stupid! You'd thing you would get rewarded for being a safe driver but no. :(

When are you allowed to take the exam again?

By the way, your timeline says you are moving to california on 19th July 2098. lol ;)

AOS Approved on 10-17-08 (details in profile)

Removal of Conditions on 07-19-10

In this tedious process, we tend to forget that this is all worth it.

I love my hubby beyond anything in this world.

It's totally normal and it depends on the person conducting the exam. Some are more strict than others. Just shake it off and bring back the good vibes for your next one.

When my husband took his driver's exam in NH, the examiner failed him because the vehicle had a minute crack in the bottom of the windshield (never mind that the vehicle had passed a safety inspection with that crack in the windshield). Hubby had to wait 10 days and retake the test. When he did, the examiner on that day told him it was ridiculous that he had been failed previously.

Good luck on your next exam :)

Don't worry about it. You'll pass on second drive test.

When I failed on my first drive test I didn't feel bad about it because I failed to stop at stop sign and waited for oncoming traffic too long.My second drive test I failed again because I didn't wait for oncoming traffic when I make left turn on green Light (It was safe to turn Left on green light.) On my 3rd drive test it took 25minutes and I passed it. I used to freak out.

Thanks everyone for all of the replies and support - I feel better and slightly less like a failure today, worse things happen in the world, although dealing with any US government representative (state or federal) definitely feels pretty bad at times... they are pretty much programmed to use whatever power they have to make you feel small - maybe there are exceptions but I have yet to come across them. I would love to have seen my driving examiner take the UK test!

Good luck to all of you and your significant others as you learn to drive or attempt the test!

my road test is scheduled for tomorrow and i am kinda freaked out. on the web it says that 50% will fail on their first time. not very encouraging. you would think that they allow ppl with foreign driving licenses to just convert it to a US license. oh well, i guess its because they want yuo to master driving on the right side and all...

wish me luck...and good luck to all of you!!!

Hey, reading your comments and the comments of others gave me a good chuckle, almost comforting :P because I have to take my driving test too, and I'm completely terrified of this happening. I believe you are a good driver but I'm not going to admit that I am so this was just very good to read and help me be prepared as much as I can. I hope you pass your next one!!!
