Hello- please forgive me if I'm posting this in the wrong forum...

I'm wondering if there are any people out there who have found themselves in my situation...

I am a college student, and I currently am under my parent's health insurance. Once my fiance comes and we are married (December) I will no longer be a dependent and therefore can't get my mom's insurance. I'm going to try and figure out how I can get insurance (maybe through my university) but I'm wondering:

How would my fiance (soon-to-be-husband) get health insurance once he comes here? I just feel really lost as to how he can do that. Does anyone have any advice for me??

Thanks,

Caity

be prepared for a premium "shock" if you want coverage that is anything like what your currently provided by mommy, particularly if you cannot get in some sort of group program.. google search will give you a list of possibilities

Your university may have an affordable group plan that can be set up to include your spouse, but the cost will be considerable. Think $800 per month for full coverage (at least). A high deductible plan ($1,000 deductible) can run $400 per month for the two of you.

It is very expensive to get health insurance here in the US. The best way would be to either one of you to get full time employment at a company that can offer you both health insurance. Otherwise, you're looking at at least $500 per month.

My plan costs $60 a month ($720/year) but has terrible coverage! I have a $1,500 deductible so basically nothing is covered until I hit that $1,500 mark for the year. For example, on my old plan, I used to go to the dermatologist all the time, and an office visit was a reasonable $15. Under my current plan, nothing is covered, I found that out the hard way, my dermatologist office visit cost $90. So basically under my current plan I can never go to the doctor. Even prescriptions are ridiculously expensive, so I can't get them either.

But...Say I got into a serious accident and I racked up a +$10,000 medical bill, I would only pay $1,500.

My tip: I look at my gym membership as health insurance. It is really expensive but if I keep consistent (which is very difficult) then I will minimize my future health problems and hopefully live a long and robust life!

Would my fiance be eligible for some sort of traveler's health insurance until he can get a full-time job here with benefits? Or do they need to have proof of returning to their country in order to get that kind of insurance?

It will depend on what you are trying to "cover" with the insurance.... Is it just catastrophic medical?

YMMV

I was jobless awhile, and needed an individual plan. They're expensive, unless you get a minimal coverage plan. I found one through Blue Cross Blue Shield (google them +individual plans). It was $60/month for a $1000 deductable, and the first 3 visits to doctors were co-pays (I think $25). The rest was deductable, then pay 20%. Not worth risking being uncovered when plans come so cheap. You'll be glad if you end up in the hospital with a big bill.

When you lose your coverage, you should pick up insurance within a 30 day window, if possible. Otherwise you may be subject to pre-existing condition issues for up to a year... even if you don't have one, they often deny people legit items claiming they're pre-existing.

It is definately sticker shock. I paid over $600 a month for my husband, as soon as we were married, and he was added to my plan. Had to do that for a year and 3 months.

I did the happy dance when he finally got his own through his employment.

It was necessary. My husband has sickle cell and I could not risk major expenses.

Life's just a crazy ride on a run away train

You can't go back for what you've missed

So make it count, hold on tight find a way to make it right

You only get one trip

So make it good, make it last 'cause it all flies by so fast

You only get one trip
