Hi,

This is my first post, but I've been reading VJ for a while... I am Canadian and I am getting married this month to my American husband. Then, we are planning to follow the CR1 route as soon as we get the marriage certificate. I will continue to live in Montreal until we get it; we have the "chance" of living not so far from one another, so weekend visits are possible (and, so far, I didn't have to much trouble with crossing the border, always truthful there!).

Now, my question... anyone got married at the Montreal Courthouse and can tell me how long it takes to get the certificate - or do we receive it right there, after the ceremony?

Thank you :)

... and, thank you for sharing your experiences since it's really helpful for the next ones (like, uh, me!)

Hello, and welcome to VJ Canada Forum! Hopefully someone will be by shortly to help you out. I went the K-1 route like Mephys, so I came to the USA and got married here. If someone doesn't know the answer, this link might help. Call them and see how long it might be to get the certificate back.

Hi,

Welcome to the Canada forum!

Just a note that the certificate from a courthouse would not be acceptable to the National Visa Center - you will need to get:

Quebec: Applicants should obtain "certified copies of an act" from the Direction de l' Etat Civil in Montreal (2050, rue de Bleury, sixth floor, tel:514-864-3900) or the Directeur de l'Etat Civil in Quebec City (2535, boulevard Laurier, Ground Floor, Sainte-Foy, tel:418-643-3900; fax:418-646-3255). Further information, including other locations and information on ordering by mail is available online.

Thank you all!

I knew about the État civil to get the certified copy... now, I left a message to the Court house to see if we get something right there, after we did it!

Mephys: Ben oui, mais je sacre pas trop trop naturellement ~ je pense bien me trouver un t-shirt chez Montréalité par'zemple! :)
