I mean - if you run up huge credit card debts to fund a lifestyle that is beyond your means its a given that you're going to have to make sacrifices later on in order to pay it back.

So, if I run up my bills, it's OK if I go rob a bank to get the money to pay it back? You know, sort of take an involuntary "donation" from everyone else.

The national deficit belongs to everyone. There's no way around that.

Certainly gives me an incentive to earn less money and contribute less to the economy. Why bust my ### going to school, racking up student loans, and getting a good job with good benefits, when I can sit on my ###, get a crappy job, and live off the welfare state?

Again - we haven't seen any concrete proposals for how this is going to work, if indeed it happens at all.

All I've heard from Obama is the bit about raising the high-end of the tax scale from 36% to 39%.

I guarantee you that if I was fortunate enough to make over 250K a year I would be wiling to pay an extra 4% on the earnings above that 250. Who got us here anyway? You guys can try to blame the Dems all you want but the truth is it was your boy Bush and his buddies in the G.O.P..

But this relies somewhat on stereotypes. You can't assume that people who make less money don't work hard - otherwise why are teachers and firefighters constantly lobbying the local authority for higher wages?

Too many people buy into this capitalist wet-dream that if a person simply works hard they be promoted at work, will be able to afford 2 or 3 overseas vacations a year, a yacht and a 6 bedroom house with a pool.

While its certainly the case that you can't get these things without hard work (or via inheritance - if you're lucky) the fact remains that for a lot of people it doesn't matter how much you bust your a$$ - you may still find it hard to make ends meet.

I think teachers and fightfighers make a lot of money, when benefits are figured in - or overtime in the case of FF - or the fact that school systems are not year-round in the case of teachers.

I'm just wondering why people are tearing their hair out and decrying that the US is going to transform into the USSR over a vague article about a government focus group.

All kinds of ideas get thrown around in government - it doesn't mean that they're going to translate into tangible legislation.

I'm not sure I understand your resentment. Again - what are you basing this on? It seems to me that a lot of people turned bat$hit over that Joe the Plumber "spread the wealth" quote and like to conclusion-jump about what that might mean.
