Bloomberg is reporting that Larry Summers is on a very short list for nomination as Secretary of the Treasury. One doesn't need to look at the global financial meltdown to recognize that this is a truly critical post but the impact and import of this post cannot be underestimated. With the need to move toward a more sensible energy policy and the myriad of issues of Global Warming, hopefully, a (if not, the) top agenda item for the coming Administration, it is important to place an environmental/energy/global warming lens against every potential cabinet appointee. And, in this vein, Larry has provided very serious reasons to question his candidacy ... if not torpedo it.

For example, when at the World Bank, Summers signed a memo advocating exporting polluting industry and toxic pollutants to Lesser Developed Countries (LDCs), a concept which is fundamentally at odds with any concept of environmental justice and blindly ignorant of the potential and imperative for 'clean' developmental prospects. If Summers still holds to any of the concepts he put forth in that memo, he simply should not be considered for a Cabinet position.

Summers is an ardent proponent of free trade and globalization, and frequently takes positions on a number of politically-charged subjects. This, along with his direct style of management, made him controversial as President of Harvard, particularly among his colleagues in the humanities and social sciences.

For that reason alone, he is the wrong man for the job.

I think understanding this involves a two pronged approach. What he was advocating was in regards to an economic policy allowing other countries to make money off of pollutants through storage and processing of it. This is completely separate from the concept of environmental justice and personal ownership/responsibility over pollutants. He wasn't working in this position as a negotiator for the UNEP, he was there as a participant for the World Bank.

The Obama Cabinet is going to disappoint you.

Well let me clarify. It's not so much about free trade and globalization, provided that it's fair, particularly when trading with Third World countries.

Well let me clarify as well. I was projecting.

I think I'm going to be the one disappointed.

I keep hearing Jon Corzine and various Clintonite retreads and I wonder, #######? If we wanted another Clinton WH we could have nominated HRC. This was supposed to be different. I hope it is.

I think Obama is aware of that. Although his choice of COS was a former Clintonite, he's also a longtime friend of Obama's. I just hope he'll choose wisely. So far, he's been pretty careful with his choices.

I really really hope he doesn't touch Corzine. I want him to stay in NJ so I can vote against him next November! He needs to be politically disgraced, not moved over to another job where he can ** up yet again.

I've seen him on Bill Mahr's show. I know very little of him, except that he seriously needs a haircut.

Let's just say he's had a Democratic Legislature and has been unable to get anything through. He failed at building relationships, they hate him and won't work with him. Total and abject failure.
