I made the move in August and gave myself two weeks to rest, relax & explore the city (a mini vacation basically). After that I got my act together, started job hunting and quickly found a job. Now I'm pretty much settled in & loving it here!

I agree with others - get out there and meet people! and most importantly - enjoy your new life as a newlywed!!

i've been here for less than a month and so far everything is progressing well. a week after my arrival, i went down to sort my SSN at the local office and got my new card a week after. i have sat down for my drivers permit and have scheduled my road test nx week. I recently got a offered a job that will start in january (yeay!!!!!) so right now i'm just lounging around the house. i have an international drivers permit so i do drive around - to get to know the area more. i have yet to make friends, apart from my husband's co workers and his family but that will change once i start working....so in the mean time its good to get to know the area more, and find out what it has to offer... :)

You're welcome Braveheart :)

Also check out meetup.com, you might be able to find a good meetup in your area in order to meet new people.

My best friend here works with my hubby so that's how I met her. Does your hubby work with any people your age that you might get along with?

My week, almost in the States

Tomorrow I'm gonna apply for the SSN and an ID card. :star: My marriage licence is not ready for another 3 weeks so I'm gonna use my maiden name and change names when the licence arrives. Anyone had experience of this? Did you wait for the marriage licence before applying for SSN and ID card?

dealing with the ssn office is really fast and easy so i'm guessing you wont have a problem doing it again after the marriage cert arrives. altho you can wait til it arrives then get it. i havent changed my name yet but the first time around i went to get a new ssn card (i had the employment thing on it) it took like 10 mins at the counter and then you get the card within a week.

really fast?!

I guess that depends where you go... I stood in line for about four hours

braveheart, I don't think you'll have any trouble changing it over, but if your local office is hectic, and you don't NEED the number straight away, I'd consider waiting and just going through it once... up to you though :)

and if you're not doing much during the day then I guess you can read just as well there as at home ;)

The Very Secret Diary of Legolas Son of Weenus - by Cassandra Claire

Day One: Went to Council of Elrond. Was prettiest person there. Agreed to follow some tiny little man to Mordor to throw ring into volcano. Very important mission - gold ring so tacky.

Day Six: Far too dark in Mines of Moria to brush hair properly. Am very afraid I am developing a tangle.

Orcs so silly.

Still the prettiest.

Day 35: Boromir dead. Very messy death, most unnecessary. Did get kissed by Aragorn as he expired. Does a guy have to get shot full of arrows around here to get any action? Boromir definitely not prettier than me. Cannot understand it. Am feeling a pout coming on.

Frodo off to Mordor with Sam. Tiny little men caring about each other, rather cute really.

Am quite sure Gimli fancies me. So unfair. He is waist height, so can see advantages there, but chunky braids and big helmet most off-putting. Foresee dark times ahead, very dark times.

Yeah, I had major issues with the social security office too... I got my first card with my EAD, then tried to get a new one with my green card so it wouldn't have the limitation on there, and it took about 3 months... first they lost my new card, then it took them 6 weeks to get me a new one... I swear I'm on first name terms with those people now. I had to go down there 5 times in total.

I guess it does depend which office you go to! If I had to do it again I would wait until I had my green card before applying for SSN... but then I got my green card a month after my EAD. I think this whole process is pretty hit and miss.

Yeah, it depends on the office and the staff. We got married 4 days after I arrived in the US, went to the SSN office a week or 2 later to apply for my SSN (with just my K-1 visa, I-94, and marriage license), waited for about 5 minutes for our number to be called, and received it in the mail about 12 days after that.

Tomorrow I'm off to investigate my first potential voluneer job! Wish me luck, VJers. I feel a bit nervous as people don't always understand what I'm saying although the last time I checked, I speak English

Sometimes I feel like a child...Everything is so different. Even filling a form appears alien and has pitfalls. I'm only getting now - after 3 weeks - getting use to crossing roads without deep anxiety. Anyone else felt the same? :innocent:
