Are you having a hard time looking for a job?

I just went to one major retail company for an interview. The only thing they offered me was minimum wage with small hours. I keep applying for many places, but nothing good so far. I have a BA and speak two languages. But, you know, the economy is so bad. I will have another interview on Monday, but I am not expecting anything so good.

Please share your experience. I am applying for a even regular cashier or sales positions. Nothing fancy.

It really depends on your skill set and the area you live. If you are seeking a fairly low-skilled job then chances are you will be having a tough time finding work, especially if you're in an area that already has high unemployment. If you have good specific skills in sales, technology, nursing, you're not going to have too much trouble finding something. If you need a better job that isn't beneath you, then you need to develop some better skills or move to an area that isn't as badly hit.

It is easier to find a job in the field of study you majored in, but it would be difficult to find one in different fields unless you have enough experience.

If your goal is to get a good, high paying job, I highly recommend you to go back to college or technical school and acquire professional skills.

I also have a bachelor's degree from a US university and have work experience in the US, but will go back school once I move back to the US because jobs in the field of study I majored in are low paying job.

I hear you... Loud and clear... I come from the UK and I had an awesome job in there, I worked as a university lecturer for years, I hold two BAs and a Masters degree not to mention I speak a few languages and have very good recommendations and credentials... My current job in the US is underpaid and very much beneath my experience, skills and education but such is life, we all take and give and make sacrifices for our loved ones. I suggest you keep on pressing forward and eventually you'll find a job that will match your expertise and qualifications. GOOD LUCK!

I am trying to get at least part time work. I do not mind starting out as a part time worker and moving up.

I hope this economy will gets better soon.

I went to one major department store interview. Again, so many applicants. And most of them are in mid 40-50's. Wow.

Have you tried looking at the local governments for jobs? I'm sure if it's anything like Florida there isn't much but.. I'd check anyway on the local City/County or even the State websites for job postings. When I came over and started looking for work things where in much better shape but I too had some difficulty due to no work experience in the US, my certifications didn't really transfer.. of course the "undocumented/illegals" where protesting in the streets as well lol..

Long story short.. I applied for an office job with the government, it only paid $10 an hour and a "caveman could do it" but still.. it was something. Actually it was either that or the local office depot  It had benefits, holiday pay.. etc The manager that hired me lived outside the US so they knew the "craic" story about looking for work.

2 years later I'm still in the same job but, I've managed to get promoted twice, even got a couple of pay rises and moved into something closer my field. It's not perfect but it's turning into an excellent jump off point into something better.. I hope! I've also managed to use the time to get re-certified here and I'm thinking about maybe converting everything I've got into credits and just getting a degree in the US as a lot of employers want degree - experience - certifications and maybe your first born

I can only imagine how difficult it must be now finding a job as new immigrant.. but definitely look at the local governments.. you never know.. you could very well find something that your degree and skills fit into or something to jump off from later on. One more thing, the place I work at even had (they cut it this year :( ) a program that will cover tuition if their employee's go back to college!.. There were a few catches to it but.. still.

Good luck! :)

Try Target. Is there one close by? I had my first job interview there three weeks ago and got the job. Nothing fabulous, but at least I can get out of the house and make some friends :)

Yeah its tough out there. I took a job cashiering at walmart, which is only seasonal but I'm hoping it could be made permanent. Though I'm still looking for something else in the meantime. A job is a job and all that.

Good luck!

I can't get a job in my field yet either, as all foreign veterinarians have to take the US licensing exams. Shame they cost over $7000 to do...I guess the good news is that I should find it fairly easy to get a job once I am done, as it is not a hard field to find jobs in and I have further qualifications in my specialty. I confess that if I couldn't be a veterinarian here ever, I wouldn't have been willing to come to the US :( I love my husband, but it's important to me to have a career too.

This thread depresses the ####### out of me, it really does. :( I've got a damn good job here, a management position with a huge company. In my department, I do the hiring, the firing, make policy, and generally run the show. I am 37-years-old. Bearing those facts in mind, does anybody seriously expect me to work in McDonalds or Wal-Mart? No way - I won't ###### do it. I'm gonna have to do some serious research here.............

Does anyone have experience in the childcare field? My fiancee has a few years as a "nanny" in Thailand and would like to work for a daycare or do more nanny work in the U.S. Do you think it would be difficult to get such a job here for a recent immigrant?

The reason why we stay overseas because of the economy in the US. We both work for US Company and really enjoy living here. There is a lot of american working overseas and really make a living out here.

Thanks! That gives me hope :) I know I am actually lucky, as I will easily be able to get a job in my field (at the same level) once I am done with my exams. Really, the exams are the only thing I have to worry about.

It's sad but sadly it's true.. There seems to be a lot of very qualified and heavily over qualified people taking entry level positions just to get started. I'm not complaining I've at least got a job and the option to push onward back into what I do but still.. Things are not so good out there job wise for a lot of people. You never know what you'll end up doing once you get to the other side, you could well find a good job and be up and running in no time. You could end up collecting trolleys at the local walmart.

If I could do it all over again I've been re-certified in a few areas before I left home so I'd be ready to go into the job market over here. If you have any credentials you need americanized now is the time to do it if it needs done!

Good luck, I hope you land on your feet over here!

I didn't expect to have to work at walmart. But yeah its tough out there right now, I'm just delighted to have a job, rather than sitting around the house kicking my heels.

The biggest problem when you move here, is your lack of US work history. Allot of people have to go back to entry level jobs just to get a hold on the ladder. Refusing to take those step backs, may mean you will enjoy many more months washing dishes at home.
