I got married and sent the application for the adjustment of my status. Haven't heard from USCIS yet. I was able to change the name on my SS card. I went to a local department of motor vehicle to get a photo ID card so I can have an ID but they said I have to wait for my adjustment of status or a new I-94 so they can give me an ID. Is it really necessary to wait for my adjustment before i can get an ID card? if so it would take months cos it says here on this site that the adjustment of status is a lengthy process. can anyone tell me what to do? because everywhere i go or if im encashing cheques or using my husbnads cheques i need to present an ID.

State IDs are issued by state agencies, so it's going to depend on the precedures for the agency of your state of residence. You might want to post where you live.

Did you apply for Employment Authorization as well (EAD)? If you did, you can use that as proof of your immigration status when you apply for State ID or Driver's License. They generally come in within 90 days. Depending on what the current processing time for AOS in your location, you may wish to apply for one as well.

I had my passport, SS card, birth certificate, and marriage certificate, but they said I have to wait for my adjustment cos my passport says im still on K-1. I sent I-485 AOS and I-765 EAD forms to USCIS 3 weeks ago so i guess i have to wait for my EAD before i can apply for a state ID. I guess that would take a few months more of waiting. For the one who asked me how i changed my name on my SS card. I just went to the local SS office here and gave them my old SS card with my maiden name on it and i gave them a copy of my marriage certificate.

In most states you can't get an ID/licence until you have your EAD... so when you get it just go and do it then. In the meantime your passport is a perfectly valid ID even if it has your maiden name on it.

as it says texas service center in your info i'm guessing you are in tx. I enquired about the texas state id and you have to have your gc before getting an id (although I do have one for the animal shelter that I volunteer at). you can however do the driving test and sign a waiver if its the driving license that you are wanting.

I would think that what they are requiring is proof that you've applied for adjustment of status. Bring your marriage certificate, passport, I-94, etc (check the requirements at the DMV site for your state), and also bring your NOA's from AOS, EAD and AP as proof that you're applied for your residency.

You should be able to get your ID that way.

We are from Wisconsin and to get my husband's ID it took several trips. He needed his passport, with visa, we also brought his Moroccan drivers license. He had his SS number and his student ID. The only thing we had a problem with was proving residency. They would not accept a lease agreement with both of our names on it, and I tried to get his name on our bills with no luck. We have a joint bank account and had our check book. It had to show he lived in WI for 30 days. However I spoke with the supervisor, explained it was our 4th trip, and gave him everything. He looked at our marriage certificate and everything else and finally issued it. So even if the people at the desk give you grief try a supervisor.
