If 20% of the US voting population who voted in the election voted for Wile-E-Coyote or Batman it would send a stronger signal to the parties than not voting at all.

I almost literally did that with my vote for the US congressman in my district. I can't stand the S.o.B., but he always comes up for reelection unopposed. A Libertarian candidate ran against him for the 2008 election, but didn't even mount a campaign. Hell, he didn't even have a website.

And still he grabbed 6% of the vote without doing anything but putting his name on the ballot against the incumbent.
